WAYS TO BECOME LITTER FREE!

Obviously you are here because you are looking for ways to toilet train your kitty.  Well there are several methods to this as many cat owners have worked at this and found alternate methods.  You may choose to use the "Litter Kwitter" as pictured above which is a system developed that walks you through the step-by-step process of training your kitty.  I am going to tell you the way that I did this without using their system as I was looking for something more cost effective since I am on a tight budget.  I have 6 cats in my household and all of them are litter free.  Here are the following things you will need:

1 stainless steel salad bowl that will fit into your toilet bowl

1 cat litter scooper

2 bags of cat litter (20 lbs)

1 roll of duct tape

1 plastic deli tray or heavy cardboard that will hold the weight of the cat

1 pair of scissors or box blade

How would you like to be litter box free?  There's no mess... no smell... and you will actually be helping the environment as well due to less waste being dispose.  The first step you will need to do is take a few days to slowly move your cat's litter box into the bathroom.  This requires several days and you will eventually need to get your cat and his box secluded into your bathroom.  It is best if you have two bathrooms to put them in the spare bathroom, as this is a very messy experience, but well worth it in the end.

The first step that you must do is take the salad bowl and place it into the toilet bowl.   Fill the bowl with litter and put the seat down.  For the next few days you will use this just as you would their normal litter box.  Scoop and discard fecal matter as you have been doing.  You must ensure that this is VERY CLEAN.  Also ensure that your lid is always open.  You may want to tape the lid back to keep it from falling onto your kitty if they rub up against it.  You also need to ensure that the seat is stable, you can use tape to hold this in place as well.  Depending on how many cats you have you may have to clean this several times a day.

Once your cat has mastered the new litter bowl you'll want to introduce the new concept of sitting on the seat instead of in the litter.  You may want to use a plastic deli tray or heavy cardboard and cut it to fit over the steel bowl while also ensuring it will support the weight of your cat.  Cut a small hole in the center of the platform so the cat can still get one paw down into the litter to dig.  Cats like to dig holes in litter so what they'll do if you're lucky is they will dig in the hole with one paw and turn around to do their business inside the hole.  In reality they'll probably miss, but as long as they are going on the platform you are still on the right track.  If you use the deli plastic trays it's easy to rinse off any mistakes.  Remember to keep scooping and discarding, but don't worry about adding more litter to the bowl.  You'll want to keep the level going down to prepare for the next phase.

Now that your cat has given up sitting in the litter box and they reliably use the platform to use the to do their business, you are ready to move onto the next phase.  Gradually decrease the litter in the bowl until you have just a scamp spoonful.  Then when you're planning on being home for the weekend (this is the hardest part of all) fill the bowl up with about an inch of water instead of litter.  This phase is really gross... it smells and is very messy, you and your cat will both hate this phace, but once you have gotten to this phase you are home free!

Once your kitty is going on the platform into the bowl of water you can remove the steel bowl and allow your kitty to relieve himself directly into the toilet.  If this goes well, you may begin to cut a larger hole into the platform.  You may want to do this gradually... Eventually you will get the hole big enough to where the cat is able to balance on the seat and you have successfully toilet trained your kitty!

This is a very messy and gross process, to be honest.  If you do not have the guts to go through with it, then don't try it.  You will need to clean this every few hours, and it may take weeks to do this training.  Your cat may also regress backwards, which is normal, so you need to ensure that your cat is comfortable before moving to the next phase.  I suggest secluding your cat to the bathroom until he/she is completely trained so you do not have accidents elsewhere in the house.  Also, don't throw your litter box away until they have been trained successfully because if you decide to stop training you can just go back to the stinky litter box you started with.
