Have you been Plurked today?
62I came across this Quote of the Day at Click Z
"I asked a lady next to me in Wal-Mart if she Twittered or Plurked. She almost killed me. Security told me not to come back. Luddites."
-Dave Evans, co-founder of Digital Voodoo and ClickZ columnist, on Twitter.com
I knew what twitter was but I never heard of plurk. So off I go to plurk.com to see what it is all about.
What is Plurk?
Noun. plurk (plüer-kh) - A really snazzy site that allows you to showcase the events that make up your life in deliciously digestible chunks. Low in fat, 5 calories per serving, yet chock full of goodness.
Verb. plurk (plüer-kh) - To chronicle the events of your always on, action-packed, storybook, semi-charmed kinda life.
Just like twitter you can send messages up to 140 characters to your fans (followers on twitter). Fans follow your "time line" and can be added to your friends network. You can send messages to different "cliques" (groups of friends), a feature not yet available on twitter. You can earn Karma points on your and your friend's activity.
Every plurker has his/her own Karma value. It is recalculated every day and falls within these intervals:
0.00 to 21.00: You are in the state of creation
21.00 to 41.00: You are in the state of maintenance
41.00 to 61.00: You are enlightened
61.00 to 81.00: You are so close to Plurk Nirvana
81.00 to 100.00: You have reached Plurk Nirvana!
Your karma score is directly influenced by you and your friends Plurk activity. The more active you are, the more points you'll get. Using various features of Plurk such as instant messaging or uploading a profile image will also help.
High karma gives you access to exclusive emoticons such as those used in chat rooms.
You can send video and picture links. When you have been plurked you we see a thumbnail of the video or image.
So the question is, why would you use micro-blooging tools like twitter and plurk. For many is is just another social networking tool that can be fun. For business networking it is a quick way to keep your team up to date. For others it is a way to hear breaking news first.
For some it is just more noise.

You can send messages directly from your home page or through your favorite IM, such as Google talk / Jabber, or through your mobile phone.
When sending a message from your home page your plurk is structured. You can select a verb or go freestyle (elect no verb) when sending a message.
For example: pfuller loves hubpages
So your plurk can be very product driven.
You can select loves, likes, shares, gives, hates, wants.wishes, has, will, asks, was, feels, thinks, says or is.
You can add emoticons as well.

But now I'm not so sure. After having a look, I don't think I need people to be able to track my every post on a timeline going back forever. But it could be handy to put various bits of info for them to access.
Will have to think about it some more.
I think the novelty would wear off really quickly. I didn't find this site that interesting, nor would I want to meticulously document my life for strangers to read. I was struck by how boring some of the posts were. Talk about self absorbed.
There are legit business uses of services like twitter and plurk beyond the obvious social ones.
It is very convienent to be able to communicate with your team no matter what IM service of phone service they use. You can quickly send out a message on your phone and know that the message will get to your gmail, yahoo or msn team members.
Businesses can use the services to broadcast contests or specials.
Obama used twitter effectively.

Oh Gawd. As if we need yet another site to microtrack our lives.
But thanks- I hadn't heard of this. And if it was compulsory to use one of these sites, I'd probably be a Plurker.
