Hair Brush – Brushing Up With Class
61Learn which hair brush is right for you with this complete guide to sizes and styling.
Hair brushes have been around for centuries and are an important part of personal hygiene and style in today's world. There are so many types of brushes available, ranging from basic brushes to the kind of elaborate designer brushes that are favoured by hairdressers and professional stylists.
Knowing which type of hair brush will work best with you is a vital part of taking care of your hair. There are many tips and guides available which try to answer the question of which brush suits which type of hair, but the following details are generally agreed upon by professional stylists and hairdressers. For short hair it is best to use a medium or small sized brush, which are commonly available to buy from pharmacies and drugstores. However a small sized brush will not work well with long hair -- for that you need a large brush, which can be more difficult to track down in most shops. It is best to try and order a large brush through a hair specialist retailer or through a local hair salon who can order one from their suppliers.
Round brushes, or barrel brushes, are generally used for giving definition and curls in hairstyles. Again, the larger the round brush the better it is for long hair. They are often used by stylists when blow drying hair to create definition or curls, with larger barrel brushes being used to create more volume and stronger curls. Another popular type of brush is the paddle brush, which usually has a large, flat base. Paddle brushes are really useful if you want to smooth out medium to long hair. Vent and tunnel brushes are another popular choice of hair brush. They are designed with small holes – or vents – around the base or barrel of the brush, which allows air to circulate and the hair to dry much faster during blow drying. They are also useful for taming tangles and creating volume in thick or tangled hair.
Hot air brushes are quite a new product that are becoming increasingly popular. They are usually barrel shaped brushes which blast hot air through vents in the barrel, to provide extra styling and volume power, while making the job of blow drying much faster and simpler. Although hot air brushes are incredibly useful for styling and drying hair, they should be used in moderation because overuse is likely to cause damage to the hair over time. Paddle brushes usually have a rectangular shaped base, and they are popularly used by stylists and haircare professionals to distribute hair gel or mousse across the scalp. Cushioned brushes usually have an oval shaped base with a soft, cushioned pad, which is generally considered as a comfortable and effective brush type for use on all types of hair.
It is important which type of brush you use, so make sure you shop around before deciding on a hair brush.
