Women experiencing hair loss are left feeling in the dark about treatment options.

Mistakenly Called A "Men's Problem" Only

Hair loss was once thought to be a problem only for men, as it turns out women actually account for around 40% of hair loss in America. Hair loss in women can be absolutely devastating when it happens, smashing one's self esteem and confidence as well as emotioal balance.

When a woman notices her hair falling out a sense of overwhelming fear can come over her creating an even more stressful environment for the hair follicles.

Society's Views On Hair Loss In Women

As a whole, society has forced women who suffer from hair loss to deal with the problem alone and in silence. It is much less acceptable for a woman to be balding than it for a man. What makes it worse is that for decards, the medical community has dismissed the notion that hair loss for women exists at all.

By denying a woman the same treatment opportunities that are available for men, these medical professionals may be doing more harm than they realize.

Women are made to feel alone with their hair loss problem, not knowing if they are going to lose their hair completely, or if they might be sick or even dying. Organizations like The American Hair Loss Association is taking steps to ensure that female pattern baldness is no longer ignored by society or the medical community.

Causes of Hair Loss In Women

Hair loss can be a temporary problem or continue for a lifetime. In cases where hair loss is only temporary treatment is rather easy and can be done using an effective hair follicle rebuilder treatment.

The problem is that if temporary hair loss is is not treated quickly, it can become long lasting and even permanent.

Alopecia is the medical term for a large amount of hair loss. There are many different types of this condition and they each effect women (and men) differently. Sometimes alopecia can be brought on by things like a hormonal imbalance due to menapause or pregnancy or from taking birth control pills.

Any sudden change in your body (crash dieting included) can work against your hair follicles and cause alopecia.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)

Dihydrotestosterone, also known as DHT is a derivative of testosterone and is your hair follicles worst enemy. To put it bluntly DHT wants to kill your hair follicles and is successful in a very large number of cases of hair loss.

Adrongenetic alopecia (male / female pattern baldness) is only now being fully understood. Previously professionals thought it was caused by too much testosterone which is also normally found in women. While it remains true tha testosterone is definitely at the center of most balding problems, HDT may actually be the one to blame.

Birth Controls Pills & Hair Loss

Ever since the pill was put on the market in the 1960's it has become one of the most widely used methods of birth control used today.

Millions of women everywhere are given the pill by doctors each year but almost none are aware of the effects that it can have on their hair.

Birth control suppressses ovulation by acting on estrogen and progestin, for women who are genetically predisposoed to hair loss, the effects of the pill can cause major hair problems.

It is recommended that any woman who is interested in using oral birth control pills should use on those low in androgen or use another method of birth control entirely.

Treating Hair Loss In Women

The best treatment occurs when used as soon as possible after the hair begins falling out. Androgenetic alopecia destorys hair folicles and the longer it is allowed to go, the more damage it can do.

The FDA has only approved one treatment for female pattern baldness that has made a positive difference in female hair loss, both strengthening existing hair and promoting new hair growth.

The Emotional Effects of Female Hair Loss

Most importantly is key to remember that just bacause your hair is thinning you do not need to sink in an emotional pit and stop living your life. Although society can be harsh at times when it comes to the quality of women's hair we must remember always that it is inner beauty that truly matters most!

Very nice hubpage!

This is a lot of great info on hair loss in women. Do you by any chance have any personal experience with Provillus?

I've noticed it is normally the highest rated product for losing hair for women.

Got to admit.. Isuffer from male pattern baldness..doesn't bother me.. a crew cut covers it..but for a woman to get a crew cut would be a bit harsh i think. Tough break.. I hope those treatments work or the sale of headscarves will rocket

My wife and I were just discussing baldness in women. She thinks that maybe redheads have a greater chance of balding in later years.

I've never heard the story about redheads having a greater chance for hair loss. In my opinion that one is another hair loss myth.

I used Provillus with good results. It was $39 for a one month supply, I ended up doing a 6 month treatment and am overall pretty happy with the results I got.

I know for a fact that the version for women works well being that my own daughter used it and went from having very dry, thin hair to a much healthier and fuller mop on top.

Here's where she got it http://www.hairfallingouthelp.com/treatment

Good post.

I personally feel may be related to the phenotype. Does anyone have information as to which ethnic groups are the most/least likely to show female pattern baldness?

I'm hoping the redhead thing is a myth. I have 3 daughters with red hair!

When I was studying for exams in school days I found my hair coming out in chunks. You wouldn't think it now to see how thick my hair is. I was given something to calm my nerves and the problem has never resurfaced.

I have just been reading an artilce about a girl who has been left bald after her braids were done too tightly. Especially sad for a youngster

Our society does tend to view this as a male-only problem, so I thank you for providing this information - and a solution! Having been blessed with good genes in this regard, I haven't struggled with hair loss myself, but have known a good many men who have. So, I can only imagine what it's like for women who have this problem in our image-conscious world. Thanks again.

The treatment that this article talks about works pretty good. I started using it about 3 months ago and my hair has stoppped thinning. Good thing too because it was really starting to ruin my head, I thougth I was going to go completely bald and have to wear a wig.

I used to lose a lot of hair every day, it was really bad but this stopped my hair falling out. Now I'm waiting for the new hair to start coming in.

I got 6 months of Provillus here http://www.hairfallingouthelp.com/treatment/
