When hair implants first became widely noticed, the methods used were quite crude in comparison to today's standards. In those times, doctors would use what they called plugs and strips. Unfortunately the final results left much to be desired. There was hair in the treated area, but it would grow in abstract ways and almost be impossible to style or control. The plugs would consist of a large group of hairs. The strips would be lengths of skin that contained several hairs which were taken from the donor site then stitched onto the recipient site.

Today the procedure is producing by far more accurate results. The most common type of transplant is the follicular unit extraction. These can be done in a variety of sizes according to the section of the area being transplanted. A small unit would have 1-2 hairs, and its best used in the front areas of a receding hair line. A medium unit is a bit larger consisting of 2-3 hairs approx. These are often used behind the small units. Then there are the large units of 3-5 hairs for density . These are the basics of the hair implants themselves.

Often potential clients are looking for other options. Particularly with the types of hair to be used for the transplant. First of all it has to be your own hair, it cannot come from another individual. This has been tried in the past but within approximately 30 days all of the newly transplanted hair fell out. Another method that was used ,was synthetic hair as the donor. This proved to be dangerous and in some countries such as the USA this procedure is banned all together. Hair transplants are a wonderful thing but it must be remembered that you are dealing with the human body.
