78Hair Wars is the idea of David Humphries aka Hump the grinder and Don King of Hair. Humphries is not a hairstylist or barber, he is a promoter. in 1985 he was at a club in Detroit, Djing and promoting when he was looking for a way to spice up his parties. Humphries invited a few stylists to his show to off their technique. This created a hair monster. Hair styles became more and outrageous with stylists trying to outdo their competition,. "the hair thing got so big it needed it's own venue," says Humphries. In 1991 The first Hair Wars competition came to be, and has grown into a nationally recognized phenomenon. the hair styles are flamboyant to say the least. The styles often have a remote controlled item, they are usually big and have some kind of movement. Color is another affect that these lavish hairstyles have. The models don't just strut their stuff on these runways, they often dance and have choreographed themes.
Humphries decided to take the show on the road in 1994 and is now featured in 10 cities across the United States. Humphries hopes to go worldwide with a tour to Europe. The hair wars Phenomenon was feature in Americas Next Top Model cycle 7. It is becoming a real sensation with offers for reality based television shows and a gig in Las Vegas.
