Hair style advice - A work in progress.
65Hair advice from a hairdresser can sometimes be hard to decipher, so I will give you any advice on styling you may need prior to visiting your salon, and help you find the right style for your hair. As the title says this article is a work in progress. I have vast experience in the hair and beauty industry, and would like to offer personalised hair advice for anyone wishing to get a little more from their hairdresser. I am a fully qualified hairdresser with 25 years experience, so let me start by telling you a little of my credentials to give me the back up to even think about writing an article like this.
Hairdressing has been my world since I was 15 years old. I trained to NVQ level three, and took part in international competitions for three years. Competing against some tough competition like Trever Sorbet. I worked for my self, and other people for 10 years before becoming a salon owner. Building two businesses was no mean feat. It took hard work, determination, and a drive like none other. Everyday I give out advice on how to style hair to all my clients, and have enjoyment from teaching them new hair styling tips to improve the look of their hair.
I would like to make this article on hair care for people wishing to improve the results they achieve from their own visits to the hair salon. Maybe you need a few hints and tips on where to go, which styles might suit you, and which products would best suit your hair. I am here, and can answer all of these queries located in the comment box at the end of this article.
Hair styling advice
Don't worry if you are having a bad hair day
No need to worry
Women worry more about hair than anything else, especially when visiting a new hairdresser. This may be due to a bad experience, fear of hair loss, or just the fact that today we are under more pressure to look good. My clients tell me that when they have their hair styled it makes them feel fresh, and new, thus being one of the best tonics to make you feel good about yourself. From feeling a little low and unwell, it can transform your complexion, lift and brighten you up.Tell me I am wrong? Unless you have had a bad visit to a hairdresser of course. Hair advice when given in a professional way can be a really useful tool in managing your own hair at home.
Don't underestimate the knowledge your hairdresser can give you. I think generally we all know if we are in good hands in a salon, and if at any time you feel the hairdresser is not going to be able to achieve the hair care you have asked for, walk away as soon as you can. Don't sit there and let them do something to you that you know you will hate. If you have asked for hair advice, then that is what you should expect. Remember it is also what you are paying good money for. Just think of your hair as being a work in progress because even our hair needs adjusting at times.

Hair advice before visiting your salon
Here are a few tips for you to consider, to enable you to decide if the salon is right for you. I would always suggest to go on recommendation to a certain hairdresser whom someone else trusts. I find my clients can be very secretive about giving out this information too much, as surprisingly they become attached, and want exclusivity to you. Why you may ask? Well it is true we offer other services, and no guys not what your thinking. We are there to talk and confide in, and the golden rule is never talk to other customers about your clients. Confidentiality is the key, as often the things that are confided in would make great documentary viewing.
Make sure the salon has a good reputation in the area from neighbours and friends who may go themselves. They may or may not have had good hair advice at the named salon, but you must make your own judgements based on how busy the salon looks, and the professional overall appearance of the stylists. Once you have decided that you have enough recommendation, a visit will be your next step, where upon you now have to determine how good the hair service is.

Get the best advice form your hairdresser
Once you are in the salon, try to be as clear as you can about what you
are looking for. An experienced stylist will not be annoyed about you
bringing a picture in. I myself prefer this, but most clients always
say,"I'm sorry I have a picture bet you hate them". Another myth is the
weather and holiday topics. It's the client that asks about this not me, but I can take this stereotype. Your stylist should be able to advise whether or not this is going to suit
you. If they disagree listen to them, and if they have a valid reason
take their hair advice. Maybe you are convinced this style will work. The
best thing to do if they are not confident in the outcome is go and get
a second opinion. Sometimes hairdressers are unsure, and will baffle
you with hair care technology to get out of doing something that is
beyond them. Be a little savvy. Ask them for hair style advice because that is their job, and take on board any hairdressing tips even if you think it's a bad idea. Sometimes what they suggest is something you will see as the best hair advice you've been given in ages.
Ask your hairdresser for advice
Ask your hairdresser to try out new products at each visit, and make sure you ask them to try straighteners, styling products, and after care treatments, as this can give you a transformation. The odds are you will stumble across the best ones that suit your hair. I can try and give hair style advise on what i think would be great according to your hair type and style.
My favourite at the moment is the Tigi range which you can read a little more about in my other articles listed above. Thank the lord for Tigi I would be lost without it. Make sure you are using a really good shampoo and conditioner along with products suitable for your hair. Don't waste money on buying just for the sake of it. Find good hair style advice online or in your salon. Do not be afraid to ask to try a certain product you have read about, as your hairdresser will be only to helpful in giving you the best hair styling advice possible.
I will be writing lots more articles on different types of hair and products to suit everyone. Once again if you wish to receive personal hair advice or hair style advice, please leave your questions at the end of my article and I will reply as soon as I can. Now you can go and try out all my hair style advice for yourself at your local salon. I hope you have enjoyed reading Hair advice a work in progress, and good luck to you all.

Oh no I hope it looks OK now. At least you have plenty of it, so the worst case is you could go to a salon and get it styled.
Great hub and good advise. Too many people today just "stop" in any salon and get their hair done by just anyone. Only then so they look for true help once it has been messed up! I also have a few hubs on hair.Feel free to check them out and give your input.

This is something I should try BEFORE I get so annoyed with my hair. A few days ago I cut off about 6 inches so that's it is just below my shoulders. I was just so sick of this dry scraggly mess that I chopped it off with preschool safety scissors...
we even have hair scissors upstairs but i didn't think it deserved the real thing!
