For years there have been the stylists that have a magic gift. This remarkable gift to just "know" what your new hairstyle should be without explanation or effort. Everyone would love to find one of these stylists but they seem to be so rare. So for those of us without the magical ways of a wonder stylist , we must resort to conveying our desired new hair, personally. In order to do this effectively and not leave disappointed, there are some general guidelines.

First, you need either know exactly what it is you want and how to express this, or bring a picture. For most people a picture is probably the safest route to travel. Bring in a photo of the hairstyle you like. If you can't find one picture that shows what you want, bring a couple that show exactly what you are trying to achieve. If you like the bangs on one picture but prefer the back of your hair look like another, bring both. By doing this you are showing your stylist the desired style you are working towards rather than hoping your choice of words is correct when describing. The next thing to keep in mind is what you are saying. If you choose to verbally tell your stylist your goals, you need to make sure you are not confusing your words with what you actually mean. Do NOT say things, like texture or layered, unless you know what they mean. Your stylist will be assuming that is you asked for texture you know what that will do. Ask questions if you are unsure of the technical term before you have it done to you. A picture is definitely going to save you trouble when explaining yourself, but if you must, make sure you are not asking for two opposite things during your consultation.

Lastly, keep in mind that your stylist is going to be your tool. They are there to help you, to guide you on all your hair ventures. They will tell you if the photos you bring to them are not appropriate for your hair. If you are stuck, they will offer their opinions of what would look good for you. Remember, they might not be "magical" and whip up the next runway trend on your head, but it is their business to make sure you look good. You both have the same goal: make YOU look awesome. Communication is the key in having these successful consultations with your stylist. If you are told that the style you love will not be flattering on you, it is probably best to go with something the stylist recommends, besides they do this stuff for a living and that is what you are paying for.
