Downy woodpeckers are the smallest (6 3/4 inches long), most common and most widespread woodpecker. As do hairy woodpeckers, the males have a red patch at the back of their heads. Range: All of North America where there are forests and mature trees.
Food: Insects, fruits, seeds and nuts.
Nesting: They excavate cavities in the trunk or a dead branch of a living tree.

I've consulted my "Michigna Bird Watching" book, and I'm sure you are correct. In addition to your observations, the bird in my pictures is smaller than the size of hairy woodpecker. Many thanks for the correction!
Which ever they are, your photos are nice. One of those little guys, whichever he might be, is busy every morning pounding away, high in my neighbor's trees. I have tried to photograph them but they won't stand still and I get frustrated.

These photos do not seem to be of a hairy woodpecker. Based on the small bill in relation to the head and the black markings on the outter tail feathers they are photos of the closely realted downy woodpecker
