Did You Know... Legends Of Halloween That Are Myths?
We know what we "think we know" about Halloween. Surprisingly enough a good deal of it is false! During your Halloween festivities, you can surprise your guests, family and friends with a printout called "The TRUTH About Halloween!" printed on lovely and festive Halloween holiday specialty paper from ImpressInPrint.com.
- Myth: Magic Is Most Potent On Halloween - Okay. We understand that people would "assume" that Halloween would pool the magic forces together but of course, magic is no more magic on Halloween than any other day. Plenty of potions, concoctions, tinctures, poultices, and brews make their way around the Internet faster than ever before with the promise that you can shape your future or change aspects of your life by doing things with these mixtures. It would be best to make a good pan of brownies instead.
- Myth: Black Cats Carry Curses On Halloween - The myth has it that if you see a black cat on Halloween, you are cursed for a year and that someone has sent it to you. We think that if you own a black cat, the curse is doubled. Just kidding. Actually, we were wondering what does happen to people who own a black cat 24/7 for 365! Obviously, there are many healthy people that are leading charmed lives with black cats all around them. Back when story-telling was an art-form and entertainment, anything that lent itself to being dark, foreboding and mysterious was woven into stories that needed an element of spooky. Black cats just happened to fit the criteria and became the mysterious, dark and illusive companion of every witch known in folk tales.
- Myth: Jack-O-Lanterns Ward Off Evil Spirits - If you have evil spirits lurking around, we would suggest having more than a candle in a pumpkin in your arsenal of defense on Halloween. Legend has it that a cranky, scroogish, drinking, gambling, Irish farmer named Jack (hence the name Jack-O-Lantern) chased the devil into a tree and forced him to stay there after carving the likeness of a cross into the base of the tree. This supposedly happened on the day Halloween is observed. The devil was supposedly so infuriated that a curse was cast on Jack and he was doomed to roam the earth carrying only a lantern made from a hollow turnip for eternity. It is not clear how the turnip morphed into a pumpkin, but the myth prompted the use of hollowed pumpkins with crosses carved for eyes to fend off the devil on his night of evil, Halloween.
- Myth: Halloween Trick Or Treating - Most people tend to think that "Trick-or-Treating" also had origins having to do with warding off bad spirits. While not entirely off-base, the explanation concerning the origin of Halloween Trick-or-Treat was best explained as an answer on AnswerBag.com:
The history of "Trick'O'Treating" can be traced back to the early celebrations of All Soul's Day in Britain. The poor would go begging and the housewives would give them special treats called "soulcakes". This was called "going a-souling", and the "soulers" would promise to say a prayer for the dead.
Over time the custom changed and the town's children became the beggars. As they went from house to house they would be given apples, buns, and money.
During the Pioneer days of the American West, the housewives would give the children candy to keep from being tricked. The children would shout "Trick or Treat!". - Thanks to bugmann's answer on AnswerBag.com
Have fun with these surprising facts and have new activities planned around what "may" have been the "real Halloween". It is always fun to have lively discussions around the family dinner table about new things that would interest both young and old alike!
Oh, and about the fun or horror of Halloween - that is up to you. It has been a real debate whether or not Halloween is "fun" or a celebration of what is of a "horror" nature. We'd of course, like to see the fun side of Halloween win out. Whimsical ghosts, (like Casper), light-hearted pumpkins that delight instead of fright - and good-hearted fun should be the light of every child's heart and mind. When we celebrate any day, let it be a day of light and DElight! We've found many delightful designs for invitations from ImpressInPrint.com for Halloween and continue to love the day - which is NOT a holiday - but a day to have fun......none-the-less!
