Halloween Costume Ideas to Wear to Work
97
My Experiences with Halloween at Work
I've been fortunate to work for employers who enjoy giving back to the community and enjoy the fun of Halloween.
One employer participated in hosting a trick-or-treating event for handicapped and under-privileged children. These children often missed traditional Halloween activities because of their handicaps or social situations. The children were bused to our location during the day on Halloween and the entire office dressed up and passed out candy to these children. Many of them couldn't walk and were wheeled through in wheelchairs and wagons. You could tell from the looks on their faces that they loved the costumes and the fun.
Another employer participates in a local program where we sponsor a school campus. We hold money-raising events all year to fund projects for this particular school. At Halloween, this entire campus of children will be bused to our location to trick-or-treat while we are fully decked out in themed costumes.
I've gone as a housewife, an alien, a clown, a gypsy fortune teller, an Indian, a hobo, a cow, an oversized kid, a witch, an old lady, and many more.
How to Choose a Costume to Wear to Work
Some things to consider when choosing a costume to wear to work are:
- Comfort-If you're going to be wearing this costume for 8+ hours, you definitely want it to be comfortable. Comfortable encompasses a lot of things. Will the costume be too hot to wear all day? Will it be too cool? Fairy princesses don't wear sweaters. Can you sit at your desk with the costume on? Those lovely feathered angel wings and halo may look cute at 7 a.m., but can you really sit at your desk all day in them? Can you safely drive in your costume?
Makeup or Mask? Experiment with the makeup beforehand if you're planning to wear makeup. See how many hours you can wear it without going crazy. Some of the heavier makeups can get irritating by the end of 8 hours. You need to know how your face is going to feel. If you wear a mask make sure it doesn't limit your ability to drive. It would be best if you didn't put it on until you got to work. While you're working, make sure you can see. Condensation from your breathing can also build up under masks if you wear them too long at a time.
Suitable for the Workplace-You'd think I wouldn't have to say this, but I do. There are lots of sexy costumes out there and most are not appropriate for work. Use some common sense about what is appropriate. Think about the types of people your office interacts with and if they would be offended by your costume.
Themes-sometimes themes can create a fun atmosphere at work. Think about the layout of your office. Does it lend itself to certain themes? For instance, we once utilized an row of cubicles to create Diagon Alley from Harry Potter. Each cubicle represented one of the shops and we all dressed up as shop owners. We were able to turn out the lights, leaving only dim lamps when the kids came by and played the theme music from the movie. An IT department downstairs had some meandering hallways that they easily converted to small haunted house that we were able to tour on breaks or lunchtime. Sometimes, your theme can be determined by the number of people in your department. If you have 3 people you can become the three little pigs, three blind mice, the three musketeers. You get the idea.
Costume Ideas with Items You Probably Already Have or Are Easy to Get
Easy costumes you can create from things you probably already have:
Housewife-one of the most comfy costumes I've ever worn to work. I wore my gown, housecoat, and big slippers. I carried around a new flyswatter, had my hair in curlers and wore white make-up to simulate cold cream. I actually made it on the front page of the local newspaper that year with that costume.
Alien-you can virtually get away with wearing anything bright or shiny. I took an old t-shirt and drizzled bright fabric paint all over it, wore bright warm up pants, outrageously colorful toe socks and flip flops, and a bright color wig that I had antennae coming out of. A triggered caulking gun covered in aluminum foil was my ray-gun.
Gypsy or fortune teller-any flowing broomstick skirt, a bright non-matching shirt, a dozen brightly covered bangle bracelets and a scarf or two makes you a gypsy fortune teller. I bought a clear round light fixture at Home Depot to serve as a crystal ball. I found a light that changed colors that just happened to fit underneath it and added a handful of pillow stuffing and created a glowing smoky crystal ball.
Chef/cook-if you've got an apron, a mixing bowl and a wooden spoon you can become a chef like Rachel Ray.
Hobo-Old clothes are perfect for converting to a hobo costume. You can find jackets at garage sales or thrift stores. Sew or glue some patches on, a few whip stitches is all it takes. Get some gloves that you can cut the fingers out of. Blacken your face to create the stubble-look. A stick with a bandana on the end works well for a prop.
Clown-colorful clothing, a few balloons, red cheeks and nose is really all you need to become a clown. Half a yard of colorful gathered trim works well for a clown collar.
Scarecrow-overalls work great for this, but if you don't have overalls, suspenders will do. A checkered or plaid shirt, straw hat, jeans with patches and some raffia are all you need. A black eyeliner pencil is all you need to create some stitching on your face.
Hillbilly-an inexpensive pair of Bubba teeth and some torn jeans and shirt is all it takes. Maybe a straw hat and a piece of hay for your mouth.
Cowboy/Cowgirl-jeans, hat, boots and bandana. Add a number to your shirt and you become a rodeo cowboy.
Marathon runner/Cyclist-jogging shorts, tennis shoes, a paper number pinned to your tank top.
Hippy-bright colored or tie-dyed shirt, bellbottom jeans, round sunglasses, bandana, flowers or headband for hair. Peace signs.

Thanks for the suggestions - we all dress up at work for Halloween!
Since I am working at home now, I'm going to wear my best suit and tie, and dress up as a successful author and speaker.
I completely forgot about Haloween until I went food shopping earlier and saw the masks, pumpkins etc... missed out on a right niche here! Looks like you have been very busy with them. Good stuff.
Sabreblade: That's a great idea too! Thanks for sharing!
Cheri: I think more and more offices see the benefits of allowing their employees do it. It really helps morale!
Scott: Sounds nice, you'll have to post some photos!
Ryan: It's not too late! Jump in now! It's the perfect time, since it's this week's HubMob topic!
Thank you all for stopping by!
I would like to go to work as a large stuffed cow, but driving a school bus, "they" could take issue with it, as I'd have trouble fitting behind the wheel. Maybe an anorexic cow? Something from Texas?
LOL....I failed to include the Lounge Lizard! An anorexic cow would be cute......you could be the Skim Milk cow. :)
It sounds like a lot of fun to dress up for work.
Congratulations in all your achievements, you rock!!!
I agree, comfort is a very important consideration, you don't want to start the day all wonderfully dressed up to end up half dressed -at least not at the office!
Oh, that's great--you guys are really into Halloween! I'm like a kid--I love it too. Good hub, good ideas, thank you.
Thank you so much Princessa! It's a lot of fun to dress up at work!
The only type I regretted my costume was the year I made this warrior type costume out of layers of plastic tablecloths. It was rather hot. I just wasn't thinking that year. Thanks for stopping by Anath.
Thanks Paradise! We really do get into it. We usually have themes by departments and they give away prizes. We won 1st place the year we did Harry Potter. There were about 75 of us dressed as every Harry Potter character imagineable.
Don't think they'd appreciate this on the hospital ward where I work :) The patients are all elderly. Might frighten them to death.
I don't know, Ethel....I think the elderly would appreciate the dominoes. Playing dominoes is a huge hobby for the elderly here. :)
You have some really good ideas. I used to dress up for work on Halloween, too. One year two of my co-workers and I were the California raisins. We even danced to "Heard it Through the Grapevine." I was also a geisha and a nun. I found out who all the perverted guys were; they wanted me to spank them with my yardstick (I didn't waste my time carrying a little ruler).
I saw a girl dress up a California Raisin too, it was really cute. I had another friend come as a geisha girl. I haven't had a friend try to pull of the nun trick yet. I bet you did get a lot of attention with the yard stick. LOL Thanks for sharing, Margaret.
Great suggestions!!
Thanks Terrylee!
OOh! The "Skim Milk" cow!! Hahahaha!! Perfect! Make my Udder really big tho, Tiny Udders are soooo last year!
We'll make your udders udderly amazing Candie!
Nice choice ,I can select costume because your hub.
Glad I could help Kyon!
I work from home, but this was actually helpful to my thirteen year old daughter for school. Thank You!
I learned very with this article. Congratulations!
Very cool Sandi, glad I could help!
Thanks Magdielqr!
Great post you got here... I wonder what costume should I wear??? Hmmmm ...
OMG! Man, did you ever do your research! Thanks for all of the ideas. (I guess I better get planning :-)
Cool, I really like the tips for costumes to wear to work...things certainly good to take into consideration!
Receptionist: Pick something you wouldn't ordinarily pick, be adventurous this year, just make it comfy!
Jessica: Thanks! I actually didn't have to do any research on this one. This one is stictly from personal experience. Glad you enjoyed it.
Moviesbymail: Glad you enjoyed it too.
Thanks to all of you for stopping by!
Any good suggestions for couple costumes??
One of the cutest I've seen is Bacon and Eggs. It would be a really easy one to make yourself even. Or you could go as Peanut Butter and Jelly. I have some more ideas in another costume hub. The link is above...scroll up to the girl in the candy corn costume. It's the first one under hubs by me.
Great resource on halloween costumes that you can wear to work. Every year, I have always been caught up in a dilemma trying to get the best costume and at a cheap price. Great information for your creative halloween costume ideas.
Congratulations in all your achievements, you rock!!!
Thank you keniasearch! I'll have to check out your hub. We all love to save money doing it.
Thank you so much magdielqr!
funny and cool ideas you have there!! now it'ss just a matter of picking the best!!
I hope I gave you some ideas you can use, CSD1509
I hadn't thought of the dominoes costume for work but that is perfect and should be easy to make. Thank you for a great idea. I just love your Hubs, they are always great.
Thank you so much Tesa. I love the dominoes too. Simple, but very nice-looking.
Good idea I will choose Gypsy instead.
Awesome, Fortunate! Have fun with it!
Some Great ideas - we used to do a similar thing in Wales on 'red nose day' - now I simply dress up as a geek on Halloween - hang on - I do that every day of the year!
LOL....I work with some myself, SimeyC! Thanks for stopping by.
good hubs yours
Nice comment yours. :)
I think I would have to be Maleficent. But it is a good thing that I work from home!
One year when part of our office was doing Disney Movies someone came dressed as Maleficent and she looked the part. She's tall and thin and has this elegant straigh-shouldered walk. It was a very fitting costume for her.
Lots of good ideas and suggestions in this hub, thumbs up!
Thank CS Alexis.
i'm new here
it is a good thing that I work from home!
Welcome to HubPages Kungfuboy! Why? Would you have a hard time choosing?
KCC, your hub makes me think it's boring here during Halloween. =) I don't think we can go to the office wearing Halloween costumes. Oh well, I'll just view the pics here online. How about posting some pics from your office during the Halloween? =)
We have tons of pictures, but the problem is cropping everyone's heads off or getting permission. The top pic is from my office and they were easy enough to crop. I'll see if I can get any more.
In India we don't celebrate halloween. I guess we are missing the fun of halloween.
Only One word to characterize such a great post “WOW” that was a very interesting readugg boots uk
Everything dynamic and very positively!ugg boots
You are definitely missing out Peterander! Maybe you could start something. I think you should organize a group and start doing it. :)
Very nice
I like costumes that don't have to be "costumes" for example a witch. A long black skirt and shirt appropriate for the office, but with a witches hat, or a bumble bee dressed in black and yellow with a headband that had "antennaes" on them.
That works for some HappyHer. :) Thanks for stopping by.
Good article,
I worked in a big office and one Halloween the mail guy, who pushes around of cart of mail, dressed up as Egor. It was pretty funny.
Thanks bgpappa! That does sound like a cute idea for someone who pushes the mailcart. :)
good choice :)
Thanks, Nursing-degrees!
Nice.
Great hub and ideas.
Robert Ballard
Thank you Sukhera & Putz!
AWESOME hub!! i personally love halloween! and I can not wait and loved your ideas!
Thank you JeniMarie! I love Halloween too! I just decided today that I'm going as a scarecrow this year. I've never been a scarecrow. :)
I have been reading your blog for about a year now and enjoy it very much. There’s always something interesting to read or to learn, and the photographs are lovely!
Great hub! Thanks for the ideas
A fun hub.
I've gone to work as Cleopatra and also as a tiger. The tiger costume involved a lot of face painting, and I had a cute costume with a hood and ears.
When I wore the tiger costume, I not only scared a few people, I also won the prize offered that day. The department head said that we would have a prize for the best costume worn, but I was the only one who dressed up! I never felt self-conscious, though.
Thank you, Yootravel, jbryant & Gracenotes!
Theme costume to work is a wonderful idea. My husband works in a hospital (administration) and I'll tell him about this and your hub. I like your dominos costumes!
Thank you very much! The dominoes were worn by a group in our HR department who wanted to dress up but didn't want to wear elaborate costumes, make-up, etc. They were really cute. I think the dominoes would be cute in a nursing home where they play a lot of dominoes.
I just posted a very similar comment to this one on Mighty Mom's Halloween costume hub, but it never hurts to ask more than one person the same question.
"Why is it that in the USA any costume seems to be acceptable for Halloween, whereas in the UK they are based on the theme of the occasion, e.g. Vampyres, Werewolves, Witches, Ghosts etc. Surely this is what Halloween represents, spookiness and ghouls, not fancy dress as it would be any other day of the year. Why is this??"
Thanks. :)
As with most things, it probably started with someone with a nice marketing budget who thought it would be cool. It caught on and the rest is history. :)
You may well be correct KCC, but it seems a bit of a shame to me, as part of the fun was the "spooky" aspect of the costumes :)
I like the diversity, but I guess it's because it's what I've grown up with. Many people do take the cute costumes and bloody them up for the bit of gore if that helps any...LOL.
Hmmmmm, a gory domino, now there's a vision I never thought I'd have LOL :)
LOL...with the right marketer it could be a hit, Mistyhorizon! Coming soon to your town, The Bloody Dominoes!
Sounds like a pop group, or someone's opinion on the whole game of dominoes !!! LOL
Very true!
What a great idea for a Hub :) I'm considering this because my organization wants us to dress up... and we work at a high school after-school program, so we have to be appropriate for the kids!
I'm glad you enjoyed it Glassvisage. That's one of the reasons we tend to shy away from really scary costumes too. We are hosting small children. But, with high school kids, you'll have more to choose from. Have fun with it. You'll be glad you did.
Too bad I'm too lazy to get into costumes... if somebody else does all the work for me I'd wear one. LOL
Then somebody should really make you a doooooozie!
im getin a costume happy halloween!!!
Woooo hooo, Kayla! Have fun and Happy Halloween to you too!
What fantastic ideas! I love Halloween, and always dress up for the kids coming around to the house, and I put up spooky decorations. You've given me some great ideas for this year's costumes. Thanks!
Glad I could help out, Chili63! When I was a kid we only got a couple of trick or treaters at our house. In my adult life, I've never had one trick-or-treater because of where we live in the country. It's kind of sad, really.
wow. that was very impressive.. thankz.
Halloween can be fun especially if you have on your dream costume. You have suggested some very exciting halloween costume ideas. Keep up the good job.
Thanks onewaythinky and keniasearch!
your hubs are amazing
Awww...thank you very much, Vinner!
Very cool ideas for the work place, thanks KCC.
I think it's great about what you and your company did for those under privileged and special needs children. Way to go!
Thanks John Alan! It's nice to work for places that care.
Thanks
Nice hub having great fun cooooooooooooool choice....impressive thing to wear according different ideas. Carry on Man you have great achievement.
Thanks Khmoshsin!
Hah, this is great. I worked at a restaurant last year and was called in on Halloween. No one told me we were supposed to wear costumes so I came in dressed in the work uniform. I got made fun of so I untucked my shirt and did other little things to look like a disgruntled employee. Scariest thing some companies will ever see!
LOL...that's funny Garrett. Way to improvise!
LOL...that's funny Garrett. Way to improvise!
It is great that you go trick-or-treating for handicapped and under-privileged children. We should do this more often. A holiday is meaningless if we only think of ourselves. Sharing and helping others is the greatest joy. Thanks.
It really makes it fun when you see what it does for the kids. Thanks for stopping by alexchia01.
Awesome hub...Love the ideas, thanks!!
Thank you very much, Madison!
Man I absolutely love the dominoes idea, especially if you're on a budget. Cool hub.
That's one of the reasons I included it, Lewisbiel. I think they are just flat classy looking done up the way my co-workers did them. It's really cute when you have several doing it. Thanks for stopping by.
Currently I'm not working so I'm just a plain housewife; maybe I should try being an office girl on Halloween LOL! BTW working or not these are good tips!
Thank you Philent! Since you're not working, you can be anything....no retraints....go wild! LOL
I just visited this site for the first time and clicked on your "Hub" I guess it's called. Was reading all the Halloween commentary. Last year I had the cheapest and most fun costume ever. I was dressed as Sarah Palin and looked so much like her, I was actually stopping traffic and it wasn't even my idea. Visit Facebook and check it out - it's hilarious. I'm Grisel Padron. You have a great Hub and very interesting writing. Dying to get into it but all the details and technical issues are daunting. I'm from the generation of writing columns and articles. Great work!
Thanks Grisel! I'll have to check you out. That sounds like fun, but I can't think of anyone I look enough alike to pull that off. :) Thanks for stopping by. It's easy to join HubPages. Let me know if you're interested and I'll help you get started. Everything's free and you keep the copyrights to all your articles. Creating hubs/articles is very user-friendly.
interested in visiting each others blog video photo hub
cool hub
Thank you PhoenixV!
Halloween at work is always a scary time. I'm always surprised with the 'costumes' that my coworkers show up with. Great hub, by the way!
Thank you LazarDRod.....I'm guessing you don't have many dominoes walking around your work, then? LOL
you just know not much work is going to get done when wearing them!
We actually do. The only thing I see people being guilty of is taking a little bit longer break at break time and usually spend it walking around looking at other people's costumes. Other than that, it's usually business as usual.
There may be a practical side to dressing up. One time I was visiting friends at their home in South Oklahoma. They were keen on going to all of the high school football games, one of which was on Halloween -- Friday night. Although I was one of the few folks dressed up at the game, my mask actually acted as a wind-break. The cold wind was blowing and folks were shivering, but I was loving it.
Hee hee -- I must have a thing for big cats. That evening, I had another tiger mask on.
great ideas, just another great idea for keeping costs down.
That is a great idea Gracenotes! Some costumes can be rather warm too. Works great when it's cold.
Thanks Shareitt! Every little bit helps, doesn't it?
Haha! I love the dominoes idea! This year I am dressing up to match my son's theme. He is going as "Captain Rex" and I am going to be Padme Amidala. Good work on this hub. So many ideas!
Neat ideas! Some of my Hubs show more, like Western themes, FYI.
Halloween is the best! One year my department dressed up our entire floor as a putt putt golf course, complete with one hole in each department. We spent the entire day playing golf (in costume) on the floor. It was great!
Thanks Pepperlynn! I often matched what my kids were doing when they were little too. It's a fun idea.
Thanks Dona Rosa. Everyone should head over to your hubs after leaving here!
Blogging Erika, what a cute idea! I may have to suggest that to one of our bigger departments next year! They did Candyland last year and the whole department were pieces of the game, gingerbread people, snow princesses, etc. They decorated the floor in colored squares. It was so cute. The group next to me has started decorating today and I found out they are doing musicals. The row next to me is doing Sweeney Todd. This is going to be a fun year. My group is doing a farm full of scarecrows.
wow great ideas!!!!!!!!!
Thank you startinganewhub!
I like the way your brain thinks, makes me feel alive listening to what your thinking, very cool...Keep it up ...PS Now I Know Why I bookmarked your page ;-) ...Hope you are doing well,
Hey, Ive only been the website about an hour and your hub is the 1st I've read Im pleasently suprised its not just a lot of babblin pubish, the motives for your halloween antics are wonderful you have had some exeptional bosses, as the mother of a disabled child it was nice to see that society will step up and recognise and envolve them not what I was anticipating I would read at all from the title, the advice is good too Im panicing just a bit now as I have aparty Saturday and no costumes..hum now what sould I be???
I really like your idea. It is very awesome to go as a set of dominoes.
KCC I realy appreciate your hub. It is very informative and useful. Great work. thanks for sharing.
Munchkins, I'm so pleased to be your first hub to read! I am proud of the places I've worked and how they all strive to give back to the community. Handing out candy to the handcapped children was very rewarding. With you having a disabled child, you understand how much it means to them for people to treat them with respect and allow them to have fun. Welcome to HubPages, you'll find lots of authors who are entertaining and informative. If you need anything, let me know.
Sabbatha and Camecoib: Thanks for stopping by. I'm glad you found the information helpful. Happy Halloween all!
Somebody's in to the Halloween spirit! Wish I couldn've seen you in a oversized kids costume! Come check out my newest hub for extra ideas if ya like. ;)
Interesting set of ideas. Dressing for Halloween that too to work will be gr8 fun.
Thanks Mayhmong! I added a link to yours. I got a chuckle out of them.
Thanks Craftsmith! I'm looking forward to it!
great costumes! I needed some ideas for halloween this year.
thanks!
Halloween dresses are one of time consuming to me. as i really don't decided what will i wear, I mostly use a dragon wear lol. But this year i will do something else and this lens encouraging me how to decide. good work
J-Art, glad I could help!
Patrick, dragon, huh? That sounds pretty elaborate.
Glad I could help you both. Happy Halloween!
amazing work
Loving the dominoes idea!
Thanks seeweb!
Glad you liked it, Jbullet...it's super simple and I think it looks quite classy. Not sure if you can tell, but one lady has a long sleeve shirt and the others have short sleeves. It makes no difference.
Happy Halloween!
You've got some good ideas here!
Great hub... Looks like you're getting some primo exposure :)
Maybe someday I will make some polished hubs like this, but Im a bit too lazy.
Thanks Paulette! The exposure comes from writing a HubMob hub. Every HubMob hub I've done has done well. This hub was easy to write since I only told about my experiences. No research involved there. :) Write what you know about and it'll be much easier.
cool ideas, thx for the hub
You're welcome samsungbehold919!

Of course if you work in an office, you can go the modern vampire route.
Dress all in black, get a long black duster and some fangs.
And don't forget the sunglasses!
