Halloween Costume Ideas

Halloween is traditionally a fun time for kids to go out to the neighbourhood and do trick or treat. Kids always look forward to dressing up and carrying their empty tins or jars to have them filled with candies and other sweet goodies. But Halloween doesn't only have to be fun for kids. Adults have costume parties also during Halloween and it's a good excuse to have fun with family and friends on this otherwise macabre day on the calendar.

One of the biggest questions that people ask is, what should I wear for Halloween? While most people are happy to just buy a scary mask and wear it to the party, many would be looking to have fun and experiment on their outfiits. It can range from the traditional scary costumes to whacky, out-of-this-world outfits. There are so many ways you can spruce up your appearance at a Halloween costume party. Below are some ideas you can use to come up with unique costumes for Halloween.

Scary Costumes

Halloween is the celebration of the occult, the dead and witchcraft. Many people go for dressing up as anything that relates to the theme of the occassion. The usual ones you can look at are:

  • Dracula costumes - Count Dracula is known for being blood-thirsty and bites its victims on the neck. The typical look for this is wearing a shirt and bow tie, with a cape to go with the attire. You can wear fangs with your costume, and paint some blood-looking stains from you mouth.
  • Zombie costumes - Painting the eye bag region with black and wear a tattered shirt and clothing with holes on it.
  • Vampire costumes - you can use a similar look to Dracula, with the fangs and blood looking stains on the mouth, but you can also improvise on wearing just about anything for your clothes. The makeup can be the same as Dracula
  • Witch - another popular costume idea. Wear a black pointed hat and a black gown, and have the area around the eyes painted black.

Super Hero Costumes

If you're tired of wearing scary costumes all the time and want something different, try wearing a super hero costume. It's a broad term, but it generally refers to imaginary super heros that you see on TV or cinemas and dressing up like them. They're a fun way to spice up your Halloween night. Prime examples would be:

  • Superman
  • Spiderman
  • Batman
  • Wolverine
  • Wonder Woman
  • He-Man

Famous Celebrity costume

Dressing up as famous celebrities in Hollywood (or Bollywood if you prefer) is another group way to have an interesting costume during the party. You can dress up as your favourite movie star or the hottest movie star you can think of. You could be Marilyn Monroe or Michael Jackson, or perhaps Brad Pitt! One thing to note is that most costume hire shops won't have a complete set of the outfits for a celebrity, therefore you might have to hire out some of these costumes from other friends.

Tradesman / Career Costume

Another great idea is to dress up as either a tradesman or a professional. You can turn up to the party as a plumber or a fireman, or a doctor or nurse. It's best if it's something that you dress up as someone that is not what your normal profession or job is. If you're a doctor, you can simply come in, say, a policeman. This is often a good alternative to the traditional scary costume. They can be called career costumes. If you can't find or borrow from your next door neighbours, there will be a few costume shops that may help you, or alternatively, get one of these below:

Mascot Costume

Wearing a mascot costume is also another great way to turn up to a Halloween costume party. If you can borrow a gorilla suit, or Ronald McDonald costume, or perhaps a Mickey Mouse mascot costume, this will be a great party conversation starter! They're not as easy to find, but you can also come and dress as some form of animal like a gorilla or bear or maybe a kangaroo!
