Hello everyone! Starting in October not only will I bring you movie reviews I will also be writing some Halloween rich content. This is going to be the first of four Halloween enriched hubs.

You shut the lights off and snuggle into bed, you pull the covers up and rest comfortably on your soft pillow. Suddenly, the wind begins to blow and rain pounds against the roof like Thor wielding his mighty hammer, Mjolner. Strange and unwanted thoughts begin to spin about in your mind. “Could there be someone in the closet?” or “Maybe someone is in the basement?” you repeat silently to yourself.

Since the beginning of man we have tried to scare one another with tales that trigger the not so logical part of our brain. Stories from the bible, to myths that are even told today. One of the key elements in horror films is that it makes you ask the question, “What if?” Even though we know that no horrible beast is tracking us down to eat our insides, we still have that lingering thoughts in the back of our mind.

When I was around five, my mother and father took me to the drive in movies. I remember that night like it happened yesterday. The moon was out, as a warm breeze carried the smell of hotdogs and popcorn to our seats. When we would go to drive in we would always set on the car or a lounge chair of some sort to take in the atmosphere.

The movie was a John Carpenter film The Thing (1982) about some scientists in the Antarctic that encounter an alien that could shape shift and take the form of the people it kills. I was lounging there ideally, my heart beating so loud that you would’ve thought the windows would be shaking. The scene I was witnessing on the big screen was unlike any I had ever seen. People’s heads coming off, dogs exploding as a horrible beast like creature made its way from it. I was so scared my mother decided that it was time for us to leave. I don’t really know why I was so scared, but I was. It was that very movie that inspired my love of horror movies.

My next childhood memory would go back to my favorite vampire movie of all time The Lost Boys. This 1987 hit starring Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, and Kiefer Sutherland to this day will still find its way to my DVD player.  I don’t know if I have a childhood link with this movie or if it’s just that good.  Way before you had Twilight you had the mullet supporting leather coat wearing cool motorcycle riding vampire gang.  This movie has a great story and plot and you will never be bored

There is nothing like setting down with some friends and popping in this next movie. The Evil Dead 1981 Bruce Campbell aka Ash and a group of friends go camping.  They find a book Necronomicon and a tape with the translation. After playing the tape one by one the campers begin turning into horrific looking demons. This is one of those movie that will make your skin crawl and make you jump from your seat.  If you have never seen this movie, go get it. The other movie in this series worth a mention is Army of Darkness 1992.  Ash is back, however, this time he gets sucked into a vortex that takes him to another time. This movie is more of a comedy but it still has that demon feel to it.  Again if you haven’t seen this one go see it! Here is a question for you. What movie did this Quote originally come from ‘klaatu barada nikto.’ (This is what Ash is to say when he gets to the three books)

Demons  1985 , this movie was a real fright.  Basically, a group of people enter a movie theater where there is a mask on display. After a lady puts the mask on and cuts herself with it, the whole theatre becomes full of demons.  I like this movie for the fear factor.  It will make you jump and squirm, it’s pretty gory.

Nightmare on Elm Street;  I remember one night when I was younger I invited a group of friends over to stay the night.  I had never seen Nightmare on Elm Street before so we went to the movie rental place and rented the first Elm Street.  I watched that movie all night over and over again.  I called and reserved my copy at the rental place when 2 and 3 came out.  I would say out of all the Nightmare on Elm Streets part one and three are the best.

Friday the 13th and Halloween:  I put these two together because they are equally good.  My favorite type of horror movie is the old slasher films.  Friday the 13th and Halloween fall right into my kind of movie. However, there is a point where I throw my hands in the air and shout enough is enough.  Part 1,2,3,4 and 6 of the Friday the 13th movies are all great films.  Five wasn’t bad, but at the end you find out it was a paramedic with a grudge doing the killing not Jason.  Anything after 6 pretty much just sucks. 1,2,4,5 of the Halloween movies are all great flicks. Again I skip the third installment, this movie absolutely blows.  This movie had nothing to do with Myers or the Strode family.  I will say this, I wasn’t a fan of Rob Zombies movie until I watched his take on Halloween, and I must say I love it!  I loved the way he made you feel sorry for Michael, then right back to hating him.  The Rob Zombie version should be watched if you are a true Halloween fan.
