A Brief History of Why We Dress Up And Practice Trick or Treat on Halloween

Halloween is believed to be a Holiday based around old Celtic tradition to show the relativity of the spirit world and the living world. Druids (Celtic Priest) would robe themselves in Animal heads and skins and create monuments in attempt to pay homage to the deceased so that they could reveal their future fortunes. Roman Influences on Halloween can also be noted. They celebrated two days which were Feralia and Samhain. Feralia, a day in late October, is when the Romans would commemorate the passing of the dead. Also, Samhain Gave hommage to Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. It is widely accepted that "bobbing for apples" is another Halloween event that can be traced back to Roman Tradition.

Present day Halloween is probably most influenced by Pope Boniface IV (800 a.d.) who assigned November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to pay homage to Saints and Martyrs. But many scholars believe the pope was trying proselytize pagan worshipers. This event was sometimes called All-hallows or All-hallowmas, which many believe to mean 'all saints day'. By 1000 A.D. the church made November 2 all souls day. This would be the day to honor the dead. People would dress up as saints, demons and gather around bonfires. This merging of pagan practices with Christianity is probably were we get the modern concept of Halloween. So the next time someones ask why do people dress up for Halloween you'll be able to give them a little insight.

It's great to know the history of Halloween. I didn't know anything about All Saints Day. Thanks for the info. I fully intend to be dressing my kids in some of these this year: http://www.squidoo.com/kidsanimalcostumesforhallow

One of my passions is history, and the merging of pagan and Christian celebrations and dates was a common practice, including in the New World. What is also interesting here is that of all the places the Romans "went" Ireland wasn't one of them. And now I am ready to relive past history as I choose my costume - thanks for an informative hub.

Your article here is quite a refreshing change from a lot of teh articles that you find out there covering halloween. I learnt some things that I never even knew about the history of halloween and I would have never have believed that our modern day celebrations concerning halloween go back as far as 800 a.d. Very interesting and a rest from looking at costumes such as http://www.squidoo.com/ToddlerBatmanCostumeHallowe for teh kids to go trick or treating.
