Run Hamster Run!

Hamsters need to run. In the natural world, they're constantly having to scurry away from a weath of dangerous predators looking for a furry meal. If they don't run, they get eaten. It's really that simple! While our pet hamsters probably aren't going to get eaten, they still need to run. It's important that we, as pet owners give our rodents everything they need to have a good jog. So what can we give our pets to encourage exercise? Hamster toys! The most important toys we can provide our pets with are of the running variety. There are toys available that encourage rodents to climb, dig and chew but these shouldn't be at the top of your list.

Hamster Wheels

The most common running toy for hamsters is obviously the classic hamster wheel. Your pet's cage isn't complete without one of these items. Not all wheels are created equal though. Consider the following points before deciding on a hamster wheel for your pet:

Noise level

  • Some hamster wheels can get quite noisy when they're in use. This isn't really a huge issue unless you share a room with your pet. If this is the case, be sure to test the wheel before using it. Pets are great but they probably aren't worth losing sleep over.

Running surface

  • The running surface is a very important part of the hamster wheel. Your stereotypical wheel looks kind of like a circular ladder. This isn't the type of wheel you want for your pet. The little spaces between the rungs can pose serious health risks for your hamster. You don't want your little guy getting his leg caught, do you? No! What you want to see is a solid running surface. These wheels cost a bit more money but it's well worth it.

Size

  • The most important thing to consider when choosing a hamster wheel is the size. A lot of people get really hung up on this but it really isn't that complicated. If you have a big hamster, get a big wheel! So folks out there with Syrian hamsters will probably be looking for a decent sized item. If you have smaller dwarf type hamsters, you're going to want to get a smaller wheel. Simple! If, for some reason, you really don't know what to buy, just get a big wheel. This way you'll be sure that your hamster has a comfortable ride.

Other Hamster Running Toys

Aside from hamster wheels, there are a couple of other ways that you can get your hamster to run.  One of the most entertaining ways to do so is to get him a run-about.  Run-abouts are essentially clear plastic balls.  Sometimes they take the shape of cool things like cars and trains but they all function the same way.  You put your hamster inside the ball and let him propel himself around the house.  This toy is actually as much fun for the whole family as it is for your pet.  We just love watching our little guy rip around the living room.  A quick word of warning regarding these toys though...  Make sure that your hamster is always supervised when he's out of his cage.  Although the exercise ball provides a lot of protection, it isn't completely fool proof.  Keep an eye on your pet when he's using his new favorite toy.

That's about it for hamster running toys.  Let me know what you think!
