Embroidery Styles and Patterns
69Embroidery Patterns
There are many different types of embroidery patterns, some of which include ribbon and lace embroidery, machine embroidery,cross stitch, needlepoint and free hand embroidery. The trick is finding a style and a pattern that is right for you.
If you are new to embroidery is can be a good idea to try a few of these styles. My personal favorite is hand embroidery which is the style I will discuss further here.
Cross stitch dates back many years although is still commonly used today.
It involves counted X shaped stitches to form various types of patterns and designs. The stitch is very easy to master although following the pattern can be hard on the eyes. Cross stitch can be worked on Ada cloth (great for beginners) although many experts prefer to use linen and count the threads.I have to admit that once you work a hand embroidery cross stitch on linen it is hard to go back to Aida cloth. In my opinion it gives a far superior end result.
You might also like to try your hand at needlepoint or tapestry. This form of hand embroidery also dates back centuries.
Designs are commonly worked using a wool thread and also involve working from a graph pattern. As with cross stitch the embroidery stitch is easy to master, following the pattern accurately is the key. In today's modern world designs can be printed and colour coded onto the base fabric or canvas which can make things much easier.
Ribbon embroidery can also be fun to try and there are many patterns to choose from. As the name suggests this technique involves working with find ribbon. This form of hand embroidery can produce amazing designs that take on a more dimensional look.
Of all the hand embroidery design and styles to choose from , I enjoy freehand embroidery the best. This style of embroidery can be applied to a variety of fabrics and has countless possibilities. The essential thing is to learn the most common stitches to start with. Once you have these in your repertory the sky's the limit.
Embroidery is one of the most interesting crafts that you can do at home and it has been enjoyed for hundreds of years. It has stood the "test of time" and remains very popular today.
It doesn't matter which hand embroidery style you choose, hand embroidery can give you a feeling of pure bliss and relaxation.
There are countless embroidery patterns to choose from. These can be found in books, magazines, craft shops and online.
Why not find an embroidery pattern today and start stitching to your hearts content.

Most sewers tend to look in odvious places such as the local library. These can be wonderful places for finding books with hand embroidery designs in them. Most libraries offer magazines and these are also a good source. Local craft shops are another logical choice. However we shouldn’t limit ourselves to these places, inspiration for hand embrodiery designs can be found all around us. We just need to look and keep our eyes open. I often find the inspiration for a new hand embrodiery design in unusual places. Kid’s colouring books are a good place to start. If you have children or grandchildren this won’t be too much of a problem, they always seem to have them stewn around their bedrooms. Alternatively you could buy some for your home reference library. They are also fabulous for finding applique patterns and the best news is that they are very inexpensive. If you have a passion for vinatge hand embroidery designs, you should keep a look out for garage sales or auctions. I have aften come across the most incredible hand embroidery designs amongst boxes of old sewing supplies. Community school and Church fairs can also be a good place to look, they often have trash and treausre stalls. Modern technology has also brought us the internet which means we have literally hundreds of hand embrodiery designs right at our fingertips. Some embroidery designs can be downloaded for free, while others can be purchased quickly and easily online in an epattern format.Ebay has also brought buyers and sellers closer together. It’s great to think we can recycle our hand embrodiery patterns so that others can use them time and time again. The lesson is to always be on the look out. Inspiring hand embroidery designs can be found everywhere, I know there is one right now waiting for you to find it! addthis_url = 'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.handembroiderydesigns.lennag.com%2Funcategorized%2Fwhere-to-find-hand-embroidery-designs'; addthis_title = 'Where+to+Find+Hand+Embroidery+Designs'; addthis_pub = '';
- Hand Embroidery Designs verses Machine Embroidery Designs

Seems there is some confusion as to what a hand embroidery design really is. While I appreciate the skill of machine embroidery, it really shouldn’t be described as a hand technique. Let’s face it the sewing machine does most of the work, not the human hand. The term hand embroidery should be used when referring to more traditional styles of hand embroidery that are worked with a needle and thread held by the hand of a human, not a machine. And while I’m airing my frustration I’like to know why many people feel the need to speed up everything in society. Too many people assume that doing everything twice as fast is better. Well it’s not. I enjoy the relaxation of working on hand embroidery designs. It’s the journey for me that is the main source of enjoyment. Sitting over a sewing machine for hours disturbing the silence whith the wherr of a machine is not my idea of fun, nor my family’s. I much prefer spending my time in a more relaxed and inviting environment of my choice. My hand embrodiery designs are not dependant on electricity, in fact I can take them where ever I like. They cost me very ittle money and I’m not about to trade my paper hand embroidey designs with a computer disc full of mas produces deigns for the masses. I’d much prefer to create something that is original. There is something special about each and every hand embroidery design I sew. It’s not that I’m an expert, it’s that each design is created with a little bit of me in it. Just like a favourite recipe, two sewers can use the same hand embroidery designs and follow the same instructions, yet produce something unique to them. This is the magic of working by hand and I’ll never trade it for a sewing machine any day. addthis_url = 'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.handembroiderydesigns.lennag.com%2Fhand-embroidery-designs%2Fhand-embroidery-designs-verses-machine-embroidery-designs'; addthis_title = 'Hand+Embroidery+Designs+verses+Machine+Embroidery+Designs'; addthis_pub = '';
