What to Look for in a Handicap Bathtub

Handicap bathtubs offer disabled individuals the exceptional gift of freedom of movement. They are designed to meet the special needs of the handicapped user and to alleviate the problems of disabled people and those with limited mobility.

When buying a handicap bathtub, there are several factors that need to be taken into consideration, of which safety and accessibility are of prime concern.

Different people could have different handicaps and it is crucial to choose the right handicap bathtub to meet each individual’s special requirements. In order to suit the purpose, the features of the bathtub should necessarily meet the requirements of the handicapped individual taking into account the nature of the handicap as well as its severity.

Salient Features of a Typical Handicap Bath tub

When selecting a handicap bathtub, the key components to look for are design and safety features. Easy access and exit points into and out of the bath tub, power seats and locking gates are all significant features that ensure that the handicapped individual’s bathing requirements are met in safety, comfort and ease of use.

Handicap bath tubs are especially designed to permit easy accessibility and to ensure the safety of the bather. While they are typically higher and deeper as compared to regular bath tubs they will usually feature a door that makes it easy for the user to enter as well as exit the bath tub.

A seat, which allows the user to sit while having a bath, is a must in every handicap bath tub. It minimizes the risk of slipping and allows the individual to bend down safely and retrieve whatever is fallen on the floor.

Walk-in Bathtubs for the Handicapped

With easy accessibility and a host of innovative features, walk-in bathtubs are the best disability bathtubs available and are ideal for most handicapped people. Besides offering them convenience of use, some of the features including whirlpool features, massage sprays and hydrotherapy have a healing effect as well. They help relax stiff muscles and enhance healing and flexibility, turning bath time into immensely beneficial therapeutic sessions.

Some walk in bathtubs have the showerheads attached to the edge of the bathtub so as to enable the user to take a shower conveniently even while seated in the bath tub. Individuals who were hitherto unable to take a bath without help can now have the freedom to do so conveniently and comfortably without jeopardizing their safety in any way.

Meeting the Costs of a Handicap Bathtub

Handicap bathtubs are available in a wide range of prices depending on the various features that are included. In some instances Insurance or Medicare sometimes does help cover the cost and with prices in the range of $3,000 to $6,000, it is worth checking it out before putting your money down to purchase a handicap bathtub.

Without the need for additional assistance, handicap bathtubs have revolutionized the way the handicapped and the elderly take care of themselves. By being able to bathe by themselves without any risk to their safety, handicap bathtubs offer them a way to revel in the luxury of a nice, long bath and also give them a renewed sense of independence.

I've always preferred baths over showers and have always wondered if these 'walk-in' baths were as wonderful as the look...and with each passing year both the outdoor hot tub and indoor bath get just a smidge more difficult to maneuver. Glad to learn what you've provided here!
