Also a good idea to pull together a few pieces of equipment they might prove helpful during your walk. A starter list for beginners would include: Sun Block, light rain poncho, reflective arm straps, cell phone, a couple of dollars, a couple of band aids and a cell phone. Good idea to get a fanny pack as well, preferably with a water bottle holder. It will keep your hands free and you'll have a place to store everything so it's handy when you head out for a walk.
