Sitting in profile with nothing but a sheet wrapped around her, 15 year old Disney superstar Miley Cyrus stares at the camera knowingly. Her bare back and tossed hair reflect an attitude that belies her Disney persona, Hannah Montana.
As one sits and ponders why such a young and squeaky clean Hannah Montana would be sitting on a bed naked for a camera, one can not help but to see those that came before her. Is this Hannah Montana photo scandal a signal for things to come?
Just a few weeks earlier, Miley Cyrus performed on the show American Idol and you could see it coming. Her performance was riddled with suggestive movements and insinuations that were wholly inappropriate for a 15 year old girl. Is it any wonder that this Hannah Montana photo scandal is erupting with such force?
Hannah Montana would not dance around the stage like Miley Cyrus did. This has nothing to do with being a prude. It has everything to do with a 15 year old girl that could head down a tragic road. How many examples do we need before we recognize that we are churning out train wrecks with these Disney teen starlets? Everything about Hannah Montana has been refreshing and different since she burst onto the Disney scene.
This Hannah Montana photo scandal could send Miley Cyrus down a very different road. The pictures that have caused this Hannah Montana photo scandal are not over the top sexual. They show only a nude back, with an insinuation of further nudity under the sheet. That is not the problem. The problem is insinuation. It is no secret that the cover is screaming sex. When kids see this photo, and they will, what does this signal to them? It is, at best, irresponsible and dangerous to Miley Cyrus. Annie Leibovitz is known for controversy.
Hannah Montana is having absolutely no problem drawing in the money. This is not even a situation where a floundering career is in need of one of Annie's jolts of controversy. This is exploitation for the hell of it. Completely and totally unnecessary exploitation. Will my five year old daughter or my 15 year old niece run out and buy Vanity Fair now?
Many supporters of Miley Cyrus claim that she is reaching that age where she has to start growing her audience. The teens will leave her after a certain age they say. She is growing up they say. Miley Cyrus is 15 years old. What people do not understand is that she is a child. Not a commodity. She is not going to lose the teenagers that grew up loving her if she stays true to who she was. Hannah Montana could grow up and be the example she always was.
A 15 year old should not be doing suggestive photo shoots on Vanity Fair. A 15 year old should not be gyrating on stage suggesting that she is sexually promiscuous. Period. Not because it offends me. Not because it offends the general public.....It is because Hannah Montana is better than that.
The very nature of this Disney character, as well as Miley Cyrus in her own life, have proved themselves to be better than that. This change is not something that she must do to remain relevant. In fact the squeaky clean Disney image she has put out there is the reason for Miley Cyrus' popularity. Vanity Fair, the promoters and managers, and to some extent, the public would have her believe that it is in spite of that Disney image that she is popular.
As Miley Cyrus grows older, these greedy folks will force that thought further. She will feel increasing pressure to respond to these false representations of her. Before she knows what happens, Miley Cyrus could be the next celebrity train wreck.
For the sake of Miley Cyrus, and her future, someone please step in and help her to realize she does not have to go down that road. It is a well worn path of destructive behavior that needs no additions. Hannah Montana would want it that way and so should Miley Cyrus.

Rodney,
Two words, Brittney Spears! Enough said!
I think the problem here is that this girl has been exposed to HOLLYWOOD! It's quite tough (not impossible though) to be exposed to everything Hollywood stands for and offers and NOT succumb to it's powers!
I understood that her Mom, Dad and a little sister were all there at the photo shoot with her except when this picture was shot. They had left the area for a few minutes and the photographer talked Miley into doing it "real quick" just to see what it might look like. Annie Leibovitz is known for risque photos and the controversy they bring. Did she do it more for her career than Miley's? I hope her parents get her back on the path a 15 year old should be going down and every-thing turns out OK for her.
Your candor is appreciated. I have 2 young boys ages 6 & 8 who are already asking questions if you know what I mean. Bottom line is that we live in a sexualized culture. The, if it makes money then it's all "good" philosophy, unfortunately holds reign in America. We need to stand vigilant for morals even though we'll be in the minority.
i read in an article that she was pretty upset at how the pics came out and that it was a call made between her and the photographer, who as noted above, is a pretty risque shot photographer.
miley cyrus made a huge apology over it, though not well pulicized.
persoanlly i dont know how i should feel about it or if i should feel anything about it at all if that makes sense. i think its a shame that it was done, i think it was in poor taste of the photographer and as for cyrus herself, just the poor choice of a teenager.
'course it is argueable that she did grow up under the lights of sorts with her dad, if they did not prepare her for these types of things, then out of the room or not, she should have been ready to handle something liek that with or without them

A lot of people were blaming her parents and the photographer for the decision to take the photos and publish them; the adults were to blame. It's inevitable that, without decent guidance, a 15-year-old superstar will head down the road she's on.
