Happy People Do Not Compare

I remember a quote that says somewhat like this, "Do not compare yourself to others or you may end up believing that you are better or lesser than the other person; in either case, they are both not true."

I could not remember who wrote it and if the words are exactly the same.  But I could not forget the thought that got imprinted on my mind. It served as a guide and a conviction, too.  It is a happy discovery that as we keep on comparing, we tend to be more and more depressed and bitter.  I discovered that we compare and convince ourselves that we are better because we actually lack something or many things in our lives.  Indifference and insecurities are by-products of comparison.  People tend to find the flaws in a person to make themselves feel superior.

The result:  unhappiness, discontent.  The quote tells us that it is neither true that we are better or lesser than other people.  I totally agree because each of us are unique in our own ways.  No two people are alike.  Even twins have their own prominent characteristics and weaknesses.  Siblings who grew up together in a tight-knit family and close to each other have their outstanding traits unique from the others.

Instead of comparing then feeling ill towards other people, make other people's virtues and distinction an inspiration to be a better person.  Be happy for others.  Be happy for yourself.  Whatever you have, be thankful of the blessings and privilege you receive that others do not. Instill in your heart and mind that we cannot have everything.  Perhaps it is for the reason that the world has to have its equilibrium.  It is not a balanced world when everyone who resides in this world are beautiful, or rich, or talented.  We need the mediocre or the conventional to identify the exceptional, and to help us work for a goal.

That is why I look at little children with a smile on my face.  How uncomplicated their lives are.  So innocent, so free of life's concerns.

My mom used to say something reminiscent of that quote to me all the time, and it's true. The more you try to compare yourself to other people, the worse off you tend to be. I agree with you and think that if people focused more on their strenghts rather than their flaws, we'd all be happier as a whole.

it is actually stressful, misthaven, to always compare yourself to other people. you will end up disillusioned. and yes, we have to focus more on the strengths that we have. it would be very beneficial.

But we were children once and look at what we've become! LOL So true, I wish we can grow blinders against things that are not good for us as human beings. But then again, it's the bad things that make us appreciate the good more. Thanks for sharing this very insighful hub :D

Even Christ looked to the child. I hope I never lose that in myself. I do tend to look to my elders also, those with true wisdom. I do hope you are doing better my friend? Blessings, Charlie

So true - too bad we continue to do things that are emotionally harmful.

We are so very different - even within the same family. I remember the poet Maya Angelou talking about the beauty of all of us being so different for if we were all the same we'd probably just be a shade of gray.

I'm happy bingskee - maybe because I do not compare.

Thanks for such an upbeat hub!

that's really a puzzle to me, bkcreative - why we do things that can emotionally drain us and harm others.

am i so glad you do not compare. if people will just stop then this world will truly be a happy place to live in.
