There is an old saying that goes like this, “We cannot know where we are going until we know where we have been.” Saddlebags might take us on our joyride but all of us would like to know where saddlebags had begun from. It is difficult to gauge the importance of motorcycle saddlebags today without understanding their origins in the past. Therefore this tiny anecdote below will prove to be an eye-opener for all of us. It will provide us with the history of motorcycle riding and the biking culture. All in all, it will make you proud because it will let you into a glorious past of the development of biking.

Saddlebag Basics

Today motorcyclists have made it a fashion to carry the whole world into their saddlebags. Two types of saddlebags are in use.

1. Throw-over saddlebag

2. Hard-mount saddlebag

Motorcyclists were using throw-over saddlebags for the early years of the 1950s. In that period of time, hard-mount saddlebags had come into the market over the throw-over saddlebags.

The most suitable bag for the best bike.

• The 1960s showed a dramatic increase in the number and varieties of bikes being manufactures. Therefore there was a need for the luggage of the bikers to be made. They had to carry a lot of luggage for a long distance. When it came down to the basics, hard-mount saddlebags began to rule the roost over the throw-over saddlebags. Motorcyclists took the route of the bigger size and so did their traveling distance. Bikers were not happy just riding around the town. They began serious biking from town to town and from one corner of the country to another. Thus they required motorcycle luggage carrier that could be carried over a longer distance and could be trusted upon.

• Though it is done just once, the motorcycle saddlebag culture has grown. The form and the user-friendly approach of the saddlebags have helped. Many motorcyclists have made lots of holes so as to carry more saddlebags in the rear portion of their bikes. Thus helps them to hang as many saddlebags as they want. The motorcyclists now were twice as helpful and therefore they could be depended on. The practice of saddlebags improved the looks of the bike. And more importantly, a lot of form as well as show went into the popularity of those saddlebags.

• The market is not favorable to hard saddlebags anymore but there are still some manufacturers who insist on the stylish designs. These come with matching brackets so that you do not compromise on the looks of your bike.

• If your lookout is for a hard saddlebag, then get a bag which is waterproof, detachable and that which can be locked. And also keep a lookout for the size of the bag. The size can sometimes be baffling. This is because the hard saddlebags cannot be expanded. The soft bags have an internal lining that can be expanded. So the size must be taken care of.

Motorcycle saddlebags are the accessories of the cruise bikes as they have a in-built system of mounting some kind of luggage onto the bike. Always be clear about the purpose of buying those saddlebags. If jaunts around towns are your choice then buy a removable bag. There is plenty of variety. You could also mount them permanently to your bike. These permanent bags usually are also to enhance the show of the bike. Leather mounted saddlebags will give your bike that perfect look. On the other hand for functional purposes get a hard mounted saddlebag. This will allow you to carry your essential belongings without worrying about their safety. In that way you can keep your luggage behind and let the wind hit your face on your bike.
