If you are not a parent of small children or spend time around small children you may think that the use of puppets ended with The Muppets. In the age of computer animation and the attitude of got to have the latest great technological advancement you might think the simpler things have been left behind. Well puppets have not died out. There are many great shows on television for children using the same types of puppets we saw as children.

Sesame Street

This show is still going strong after so many years. Premiering November 1, 1969 this is a show that combines animation, puppets, and live actors. The show focuses on number and letter recognition, basic mathematics, shapes, classification, simple problem solving, socialization, basic life skills, proper hygiene, healthy eating habits, and social skills. The show features a letter and number of the day.

It is a Big Big World

This show is about a group of animals living in the rain forest. The lead character is Snook the slot. The show features short stories in which some or all of the character take place in. They also have songs between the stories.

Between the Lions

This show centers around two lion cubs Lionel and Leona and their parents Theo and Cleo. They live in the library which Theo and Cleo run and the show promotes reading. Every show has a featured letter or sound such as "r" or "oo". Through out the show these are shown and demonstrated in words with the letter or sound. A popular book or well known tell is read by the family. There are many animations and skits that show how words are formed, demonstrates common sounds in words, how words can be changed by adding and removing letter, and definitions of words.

Bunnytown

Just like the name implies this show is about Bunnytown, which is a town full of bunnies. Characters include the King and his court, pirates, a superhero bunny, an astronaut bunny, cave bunnies with a pet dinosaur, a inventor, and many more. Each show is made up of many segments featuring skits and songs.

Red and Fred and Super Silly Sports are two of the segments that do not take place in Bunnytown. They take place in Peopletown and do not feature puppets. Red and Fred is a silent comedy similar to Laurel and Hardy.

Johnny and the Sprites

The main character is Johnny T (a live actor) who is a song writer that moves into is great uncle's house. He discovers the sprites (puppets) and their fantasy world. The sprites show him their magical world and Johnny teaches them about being human. Johnny and the Sprites sing, dance, and play games.

Jack's Big Music Show

A combination of puppets and live actors with the main characters being puppets. Jack, his dog Mel, and his best friend Mary love to hang out in Jack's backyard club house. They love to sing, dance, make music, and have fun with their friends. Jack has musical guests at his club house in most of the episodes. Every show features two music videos. Many of the videos feature Laurie Berkner from Move to the Music. The show features many other musicians as well. This Noggin show introduces kids to music and is meant to foster a love of music.
