Why We Hate To Sell

Hate to Sell? Most of us think that they do. But do you really hate to sell or do you just really hate the word?We all like to buy. We just hate to be sold.

As a result we don’t want to sell something to someone simply because we hate it when it gets done to us.

We also have a big fear of rejection.

The combination of the 2 brings the majority of aspiring network marketers to a grinding halt.

So what is selling?

According to Wikipedia:

“Academically, selling is thought of as a part of marketing,[1] however, the two disciplines are completely different)… Selling is considered by many to be a sort of persuading "art". Contrary to popular belief, the methodological approach of selling refers to a systematic process of repetitive and measurable milestones, by which a salesperson relates his or her offering of a product or service in return enabling the buyer to achieve their goal in an economic way.”

Bottom line it is the exchange of currency for a product or service. Selling involves sales.

Perception Is Everything

It all really boils down to our perception of the word ‘sell’. A used car salesman image usually springs to mind at the mere mention of the word. It doesn’t have to be that way.

As Wikipedia points out “selling is considered by many to be a sort of persuading”.

Now that’s something we all do every day whether we are aware that we are doing it or not. If you are married it can be assumed that you did a pretty good sales job on each other.  If you are a parent you are persuading your child constantly.  In either scenario I don’t imagine you view yourself as a used car salesman; do you?

Consultant Or Nuisance?

In order to sell something, someone needs to buy. The difference between buying and selling is when you try to sell something to someone; you are forcing your agenda on them. When someone wants to buy something it’s their decision. A sales rep is perceived as a nuisance where as a consultant is perceived as valuable.

In his book, How To Sell Network Marketing Without Fear, Anxiety or Losing Your Friends, Michael Oliver explains why traditional sales techniques don't work:

· "Traditional selling depends on [sales] techniques and systems that persuade people to do what you want them to do (even if you are coming from a place of wanting to help) while Natural Selling comes from an inner desire to serve and allow others to persuade themselves before presenting your business opportunity."

Do you want to be perceived as a nuisance or as a consultant offering valuable advice?

Learn The Consultative Approach

If you would like to brand yourself as a consultant and offering high value; I highly recommend Michael Olivers’ book. This book is your bible to understanding the consultative approach.

If you have ever struggled with getting people to join your business this book will help you discover WHY!

Another big proponent of the consultative approach is Ann Sieg. She will soon be launching a special free report: Click here to claim your free copy of The Attraction Marketer's Manifesto. I just finished reading The Attraction Marketer's Manifesto and its a WOW. This 75 page report will provide some AHAs for you as the pieces of the making money online puzzle fall into place.

Shed Old School Mentality

If your background has been traditional network marketing training or if you have a bad taste in your mouth about network marketing you have some unlearning to do.

The first thing you need to get over are these ideas:

  • The product sells itself.
  •  It’s not selling, it’s sharing.
  •  It’s word of mouth advertising.

The reason the sharing technique is so prevalent in network marketing training is you don’t need any skills to share. Until the birth of social marketing sites such as Youtube and Facebook this was the only free form of marketing.

We need to deprogram ourselves. If your upline has taught you to always be selling, it’s a tough habit to break. Network marketing training like that is going the way of the dinosaur.

What you have been taught to do is not word of mouth advertising. That is a 3rd party activity. Unbiased. They don’t stand to gain by giving their recommendation. They have no ax to grind so to speak.

Study Michael Oliver

The second step is to learn the consultative approach. Whether you are building your business online or offline Michael Oliver is a tremendous resource to aid you in building your business. Dang it Irene! You just keep adding to my reading list don't you? lol

And you're right, it's vitally important for anyone working in the networking or online sales industry to understand that old school, high pressure sales is DEAD! Only those who learn the "new" skills of attraction marketing will survive in the 21st Century.

Once folks understand that in order to get what you want all you have to do is help others get what they want life and business become EASY! People Want to talk to YOU. People Seek YOU Out! It just doesn't get any better or easier than that.

But I know you already know this because you're one of the most attractive marketer I know. Keep the great content comin, Irene!

Thanks for another great hub.
