Bluetooth is some of the latest technology used in hands free communication. Bluetooth - you know those funny looking pieces you see attached to people's ears; those things that make you assume the person in the checkout lane is having an ongoing debate with themselves. This has now become a very popular method of communication. Some states have recently banned the physical use of cell phones when driving. This makes Bluetooth accessories, and devices like it, a basic requirement.
The recently released Apple iPhone has taken advantage of Bluetooth technology as well. Their latest impact design comes with this capability implemented into the device to add to its list of astounding features. Regardless of the apparent purpose there has been somewhat of a debate over its actual function. While all Apple users were not necessarily convinced, those familiar with GPS systems available by TomTom have now discovered a perk that may prove more beneficial than the actual intent for the iPhone's Bluetooth accessibility.
Many GPS devices by TomTom will come equipped with a Bluetooth feature. This actually works very similar to the one used by an iPhone. This component can act as replacement of your GPS Bluetooth to display weather predictions imported from your navigational system.
The iPhone also effectively integrates with your GPS device in a couple of other ways. Its Bluetooth feature will support and translate the data of SMS messages you receive. Being that the most updated versions of TomTom are now equipped with a text to speech feature, your iPhone is totally capable of playing the messages back to you.
The Bluetooth connection of your iPhone can also assist with the task of importing a personal address book to your TomTom GPS system. The navigational device will read the text as instructed, then transmit and display this information on the screen of your iPhone. Pretty neat.
This stunning revelation seems to be a rare occurrence to say the least. Rival phones such as the Windows Mobile or the Nokia E65 are pretty much limited to hands free calling and receiving with no capability in regard to GPS functions.
While it is somewhat compatible, the iPhone isn't just yet the perfect accessory for your TomTom navigational device. For instance there is no DUN profile to enable a network dial up. Another drawback is that the iPhone lacks the advantages of the TomTom Plus service.
Although there are a few missing elements, enough surprises and perks remain to make the device more than useful. While the iPhone is not the greatest plug-in feature for the best in GPS systems, it can be used rather effectively when called upon. If the Bluetooth accessory that came included with your device is missing in action this iPhone component will certainly make a worthy substitute. Considering the advancements made in their respective industries, a merger or direct partnership between Apple and TomTom would be one for the world to see. Stay tuned ...

I can find no way to make my TomTom920 work with SMS on the iPhone. From what i have read, and what i have experienced, they are in no way compatible.
