Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q

I researched USB TV tuners for a couple of months before I chose to buy a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q. It was not easy to find the best tuner, because there are quite a few out there on the market. I read numerous reviews online, compared and contrasted, and finally decided to buy the Hauppauge one. First of all, it received the most positive reviews, and the least negative ones. Moreover, it works with NTSC, ATSC, and QAM, and also has a remote. Finally, it was within my price range ($50-$70).

As I mentioned above, I read many many reviews on USB TV tuners. Some got bad reviews based on their software performance, others were harder to install, or had weaker antennas. There were a few models that were getting bad reviews constantly, so I removed them from my list. After that I compared the couple models that were still in my list and found out that adding up the number of good reviews for the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q outnumbered the number of average and bad reviews for that model, and also significantly outnumbered the good reviews for the other models I was considering. That really helped me make up my mind, because there’s nothing better than the opinions of the people, who have already used the product.

Also, I noted above, that the device works with NTSC, ATSC, and Clear QAM channels – I am not a geek by any means and don’t know much about those, but know enough to know, that I want my USB tuner to be able to work with all of them. NTSC is supposedly the analog over-the-air TV that we’ve been receiving forever, and the one that is going to be replaced soon. But it hasn’t been replaced completely yet, right? So until it is, I want to have that option too. ATSC is replacing NTSC and is over-the-air digital signal, as far as I know. And Clear QAM is even better digital TV – you definitely want your USB TV tuner to be able to play those channels, if you don’t want to be replacing it any time soon. So, fortunately, the Hauppauge TV tuner I bought not only plays the three types of channels, but also has a remote control on top of that. How neat is that? It’s the size of a credit card and makes switching channels convenient, when I am sitting on the couch and watching TV on my large computer monitor.

Last, but not least, was the price factor. There are definitely some very good USB TV tuners around $100 and above, but I definitely didn’t want to spend this kind of money on such a device. I was aiming at a price around $50-$70 dollars, and the Hauppauge tuner was the best I could find within that range. I am pretty happy with my choice now and believe that those were money well spent.

I hope my experience is helpful to those who are in the situation I was few months ago – looking for the best USB TV tuner. After long research, I finally made a decision and am a happy owner of the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q. It got great reviews from other uses, it plays NTSC, ATSC, and Clear QAM channels, and it is reasonably priced. What more could you ask for?
