Have you ever wondered what it means to put on the full armor of God? Have you ever asked yourself, "Is it something we can actually do or is it simply a metaphor?" Here's a little something-something I learned about the subject--which answered that nagging question.
Putting on the full armor of God means to wake up and protect yourself from the day with God’s word. There are entire Bible studies, books, and series on this because of its importance, so you may want to visit your local Christian bookstore for a deeper understanding.
The armor of God is broken down by piece and each piece has significance. Just as a soldier will not go to war without his protective covering, we should not leave our homes without our protective covering. Some people actually visualize putting on God’s armor to help remind them of his protection throughout the day. Others jot down a prayer that involves each piece of the armor of God and pray it before leaving the house. Others simply read the Bible and pray that everything they read soaks into their beings, allowing them to always be protected by God and His word.
Following is a brief breakdown of the armor of God:
- The Belt --Truth: Take the time to study and meditate on God’s word, the Holy Bible. Use the words written in the Bible to transform your life and help keep you in truth. Stop telling white lies, or exaggerating points to make yourself sound better than someone else. Walk away when someone is gossiping. Don’t take stuff you didn’t pay for. Get the facts before believing something bad about another person. In other words, don’t just speak the truth, but act truthfully with your deeds.
- The Breastplate -- Righteousness: Take time to be with God every day. Ask for his forgiveness, confess your sins, and allow him to rid you of guilt, shame, temptations, and condemnation.
- The Sandals -- Peace: Trust God with all your heart and He will give you peace beyond all understanding. When negative thoughts, anxiety, and fear enter your life, know it’s a lie from Satan and seek God’s divine intervention. As you reach for peace in your own life, ask God to release you from impatience, disobedience, anxiety, worry, and fear.
- The Shield -- Faith: Trust in God. Believe what the Bible says is true, no matter what man says. Don’t allow man’s ways to deter you from what God says is real. Allow God to lead you to the truth and hold steadfast to that truth. When you feel discouraged, when doubt sets in, when you hear something that doesn’t sound like truth, turn to the Holy Bible and seek truth. Then meditate on God’s word and have hope in a future that is real and bright.
- The Helmet -- Salvation: Accept Christ into your heart. When you allow Christ to live within you, you have freedom from sin, all your past mistakes are forgiven, your eternity is secure, and your arrival in heaven mapped out. Don’t allow confusion, doubts, or insecurities rob you the truth. You are set free and God loves you and you are forgiven.
- The Sword -- The Word: The Holy Bible is the only book you will ever need to get into heaven. It is filled with truth, knowledge, love, discipline, and everything you will ever need to choose right from wrong. Read it, study it, meditate on it, and trust it.
