The heart is a pump divided into 4 chambers. It circulates blood throughout the body with repeated, rhythmic contractions.

It picks up oxygen from the lungs as we breathe and circulates this oxygen rich blood to the rest of the body.

The heart itself requires a fresh supply of oxygen rich blood to function properly. If it doesn’t receive this supply of blood the heart will not function correctly or worse, it will not function at all.

As we use our bodies, the cells use up oxygen and therefore need to be replenished with a fresh supply of oxygen in order to function.

If the body doesn’t receive enough oxygen rich blood to the cells, the cells will die. This is basically suffocation of the cells themselves.

If enough cells die, the body itself will begin to feel the change and will give you signals that there is a problem and that you may want to seek out medical advice!

Some heart attacks are sudden and intense. But most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort.

Chest - Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.

Other areas - Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.

Breathing – Shortness of breath can be with or without chest pain.

Other signs - Breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or you can be lightheaded.
