Oppression in America?

Things to contemplate when answering:

Any good college textbook on "oppression and how to make the masses scream for it" will tell you that the following pattern must be followed:

1. Introduce oppression as a theoretical idea. Gauge the response.

2. Make oppression optional. Depending on the opposition to the idea (you did remember to gauge the response to the theoretical idea, didn't you?), offer some worthless token that the masses believe has some great value and tell the masses that the oppression is the "trade-off" needed to obtain the token. Highlight the fact that it is still optional -- if they don't want the token, they don't have to accept the oppression. Some people will buy into it; others won't.

3. Make oppression mandatory for some things. It is essential that you create the appearance that the masses have a choice. Only instead of pointing out that those who do not choose your oppression are missing out on exclusive benefits, paint the opposition as a deluded group of sadists who are "depriving themselves" of "basic rights" to your worthless tokens. This will win you converts, because no one wants to be seen as depriving himself of anything.

4. Make oppression mandatory across the board. If you have followed the above steps, you can now claim that the oppression is the de facto standard that has not only been "accepted" but "endorsed" by the masses. Anyone who questions the oppression can be refuted with this claim, which will strengthen the masses' belief that the oppression is "right" and "good." At this point, you may withdraw the worthless tokens or advance your oppression, because the masses no longer have a choice -- they have already made it and must trust their own judgment.

I would really like you all to read the above text carefully and thoughtfully. I then would ask that you offer your take and opinions on the text and how you feel the masses of America have screamed for oppression.

Below is my take on the text

To me the above text demonstrates where we are now and where we are headed in this country. Bigger government is leading to the silencing of the voice of "We the People" and oppression has taken us over.

  • The stimulus: 1.First sent out to guage the response to it, 2.was made somewhat optional to the states, 3.then made out to be something desperately NEEDED by the states, 4.then FORCED on them whether they liked it or not
  • Housing market: 1. Do you want a home? 2.We think you NEED to buy, its better than renting and we care so much for you, 3.We'll make it easy! 4. whats wrong with you? You should take it whether you can afford it or not! Everyone else is! 5. Oh we forgot to mention, a little thing called foreclosure, now you need US to bail you out!
  • Gun Laws: 1. Too many people getting hurt by those nasty things right? 2. You need to get rid of them but its totally up to you 3. You need our gun control laws to "save" you from shooting each other 4. Gun control is what you "NEED" others agree and don't want them!, 5. government issues list of gun bans a mile long! Say goodbye to the 2nd amendment!
  • Automotive Industry: 1. Government says to GM: Do you want some help? 2. You look like you need help and lucky for you! we have the answers! 3. Don't worry, we do not want to run any car companies! 4. OH look GM!, chrysler is doing it too! 5. Obama fires head of GM and government takes a 51% stake in them! "Government Motors is born!
  • Utility companies: 1. Government to companies: too much high energy waste wouldn't you agree? 2. We can help! 3. You need us to step in and tell you how to "encourage" your customers to use less and you can increase your profits and ours too! 4. Don't worry the "We the people" won't care and even if they do, too bad for them! We'll tell them its better for all of us and they would be contributing to destroying the planet if they disagree 5. Government imposes surcharges, but remember Obama said it will only cost every single American an average of .50 a day to cover it. can't afford it??? TOO BAD!
  • Taxes: 1. You need to help us get the economy back on track 2. It won't really cost you a dime 3. ONly the top 3% will get their taxes raised which does not affect you anyway so, vote for us! 4. Well yes, small businesses: You too will have higher taxes but we need your dollars to help pay for the rest of us, it is your civic duty, be a good American and vote for us anyway.  Otherwise you are a greedy so and so who doesn't care about the needy! 5. Oh well actually the top 3% found out all of you voted for us and we are raising taxes so they decided to lay you off from your job, but that's ok, we'll help you by giving you some food stamps! Remember, its what you needed and asked for, right? Boy isn't the economy growing stronger??  ...No? Well too bad!((Put down that box of Kleenex! You can't buy that with food stamps you ingrate!))
  • Health Care: 1. Do you think you need better health care coverage? 2. We got an answer! but its "Your choice" if you want it or not 3. Look Canada is doing it! 4. Don't look at Canada and those t.v. ads, they don't handle it the way WE CAN. 5. We are going to vote on it in the senate now and you can just deal with it later once its passed! Oh and did we mention that if WE consider you to be less than a "viable" human you wont get that operation? Well it would be just way too costly and besides 16 year old "johnny" who is young and strong really needs his tonsils taken out and we need him to work! You, however, are lets just say, becoming dispensable 6. What? You don't like it? But YOU were the ones who wanted it in the first place remember?? Ohhh thats right, you're getting to old to remember things..Our point exactly!
  • Isn't the U.S. constitution old and dated? 1. Obama gaged this response when he said the following: the U.S. has suffered from a fundamentally flawed Constitution that does not mandate or allow for redistribution of wealth... and did this:2. let's throw out the 2nd amendment and since we are doing that why don't we, 3. the government decide that babies who survive abortions should be put on the shelf to die! Who cares that the very old and dated Constitution states that every person born in this country has the right to life and liberty etc. and 5. hey! Since we are on a roll! Let's just forget about protecting it (constitution) from all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC ( like Obama failed to recognize, say or otherwise "pledge" himself to do in his inauguration speech---anyone catch that?)

So, in conclusion I ask you: Are we not being oppressed? Did we not "scream for it"?

I just wonder if we will ever take our voice back. Or could it be true that we are now the "United Socialist States of America" forever to be dictated by the big all powerful government body. How sad it is to me...

I am taking a class on human behavior and Oppression happens to be a big factor in the FIRST chapter, I wonder why, *laughs*. This helped me on completly understanding probably every area of oppression. Thank you.

It's funny, but not really, that we always see lineal solutions to problems, and fall for marketing slogans. The health care debate is one example. "Everyone deserves health care" is the slogan. The solution: require everyone to buy health insurance.

It reminds me of mandatory auto insurance. If an uninsured motorist hits your car today, the first $500 of what used to be paid to you for damages now goes to the government because the person didn't have insurance. The next several hundred dollars of what could have been paid to you goes to buying insurance to avoid the wrath of a judge. Now, because the person still has to eat, you probably don't get paid unless you bought uninsured motorist insurance, which always was available!

We solved that problem didn't we?!?!

I agree. I just wish it was not so true.
