Haven or Hell

My family and I have just returned from a short break at Haven's Craig Tara in Ayr and although we did have a great time there, I don't think that we would ever go back.

As with any vacation there are always plus points and negative points but with Craig Tara the negatives heavily out weigh the positives, of course there isn't a thing that you can do about the weather no matter where you travel to and this being Scotland it rained every day until yesterday, but this being Haven there were plenty of indoor activities to keep the children occupied.

We arrived on Monday and checked in and given the keys to our caravan (trailer),163 Ayr Bay View, we were given a welcome pack which included a map to where our caravan was situated, so we followed it and our caravan was nowhere to be found, after a good half hour of searching in the pouring rain we met a member of staff who was passing and I asked him if he could help us find it, he pointed to a caravan that we had passed 4 times atleast and said thats it, now call me old fashioned but when you are given keys to number 163 you expect the caravan to be numbered 163, the caravan we were directed to and the caravan our keys opened the door too was number 49, and no matter how I try to juggle the numbers 163 and make 49 I fail maybe someone reading this can help with that.

Caravan

The Caravan was very nice it had nearly everything that we needed for cooking and it was clean with 3 bedrooms, but it was lacking 1 very important thing and we nearly came home early because of it, right at the very front of the van, was a three bar gas fire for heating, in the bedrooms which were at the rear there was no heating and over night even with the fire on at the front the bedrooms were freezing, minus 4 degrees centigrade to be exact, we spoke with other people on vacation and they all had heating in the bedrooms, why not us? because we had our dog with us..great answer I guess, but can I ask anyone else out there who has a dog, when you got your dog did it come with central heating????.

Money Money Money !!!!!!!!!

Although the holiday was cheap about £165.00 ($300.00) for all of us,it didn't work out that way in the end,the cost to buy anything in the park is astronomical, and because we had booked a self catering package it meant that we had to buy food either for eating out or for cooking the first day rather than cooking we went to the onsite Burger king, what we ordered was the same as we would normally order at a regular BK if we were so inclined at a regular BK the meal would normaly cost us £15 - £18 ($30 approx) in the Haven BK it cost us £25 ($50) the supermarket on site was also expensive almost double what you would pay in a regular supermarket, In the bar a Lager beer for myself, a Vodka Ice for Alison and three small slush puppies for the kids came to £10.00 ($20) exactly, almost double what it would cost in a normal bar.we were at Craig Tara for three full days and half a day on Monday, we checked out at 10 am this morning and in that short time we spent over £700.00 ($1400) in the camp and came home with very little to show for it.

Blatant Cheek

The entertainmet at night was nothing to write home about but it served it's purpose and was quite fun, But on Wednesday night for the children there was a disco, all of the "funstar" staff were wearing rings on their fingers with lights on them and the entertainment assistant manager was on stage comparing the events, his next announcement shocked every parent in the room, "hello children as you can see all of the funstars are wearing light rings, in a short while we will be turning out the lights in the room and having a disco in the dark, you can get the rings on the left at the shop or you can buy them from the DJ box remember if you don't have one you will be left out."

ofcourse there was a rush of children to parents after that with "can I can I can I?"

About 15 minutes later another announcement remember adults you need to get your rings too.

Craig Tara is a lovely camp, very scenic and by the sea,but all they want is your money, they have no interest in anything else customer satisfaction to them seems to be if they are spending money they must be happy.

every person we spoke to in the camp over the vacation had the same words on their lips money this money that well they won't be getting anymore of my money.

SALOU

We had planned to go to Salou in Spain as stated in my earlier hub, valentines day surprise, but my son robert had to have an operation recently and it was too soon afterwards for him to fly,we cancelled it but are planning a visit in the near future

I hear you about the caravan village prices. I lived in the Netherlands for a couple of years, and plenty of Dutch took caravan trips to the south of France, where everything was a ripoff. The Dutch response? They bought everything (including water!!) and brought it with them! This enraged the French proprietors in the camping communities, but the Dutch didn't care. :-)

I had never even heard of a caravan. A little lesson for me. Sorry it didn't pan out as expected. $50 for BK is ridiculous. It sounds like the kids had fun though, and it will be memorable for them. We went camping a lot when we were kids, and some of my fondest memories are being at the lake with my family. ;)

Very well said jimmy couldnt have said it better myself. This is my second Haven Holiday and probably my last. Drinks expensive, passes only got you the swimming pool. Money Money Money - there was a fairground but have a guess what 8 tokens for £10 ($20). Only so many times you can say no to children isnt there

Very informative hub, Jimmy. With a little luck, word will get out to the general public and this place will be forced to re-think its pricing policies.

Thank you for the information! Makes me think of a time my sisters and I stopped in Houston, Texas on a bus trip from Mexico City to Tallahassee, Florida (yes, a very long journey). We felt exhilirated to visit Houston and also thrilled to finally have a room to shower and to finally be able to sleep horizontally. The first room the bellman opened for us was in complete rubble! After that shock, every room in the somewhat seedy Travelers Inn looked great. I wondered if they took every guest to that room first :-)
