Head and Shoulders Hair Loss – Re Grow Hair and Recovery

Head and Shoulders and Hair Loss
The link between head and shoulders and hair loss is a very unclear one but many doctors so called experts claim there is no connection between using head and shoulders and hair loss and it’s simply a coincidence between using head and shoulders and genetics kicking in.
Others believe that since using head and shoulders instead of clearing up there scalp issues it started to thin out there hair and cause hair loss. I’ve personally used head and shoulders and did notice a bit of thinning while using it and stopped using it immediately after trying to figure out what exactly was causing hair loss for a few months.
The main ingredient of head and shoulders Zinc Pyrithione has been researched thoroughly and is an antiseborrheic ingredient, which means it will slow the down the process at which skin cells develop. Basically less shedding means less dandruff, well that’s what they claim.

!Possible Reasons!
It’s really overwhelming to see the amount of people complaining about the link between head and shoulders and hair loss and some of the possible reasons are the following
Clogging pores – Is head and shoulders removing the dandruff or simply adding a layer of thick shampoo onto the scalp. Moisturizing dead skin cells and sticking them back onto the scalp without actually removing them.
Doesn’t Wash out Easily – This I believe is one of the main reasons people associate head and shoulders and hair loss , the shampoo is very thick and when you already worried about hair loss you tend to rinse your head gently and sometimes too gently to remove the shampoo. Which means you scalp has a layer of shampoo on it clogging up your pores and giving your scalp no circulation. Did they even design this shampoo to rinse out easily: S.
Too much zinc? – We know too much zinc can cause hair loss, especially the orally ingested kind and could this be true when it comes to using zinc pyrithione ? it could be I dunno if some experts want to chime in. Some people claim this but I haven’t research the topic of zinc overdosing.
Allergies or clashing with Prescription Medication – They also warn you not to use head and shoulders when pregnant , taking prescription or non prescription drugs or if your allergic to any of the ingredients in head and shoulders.
Head and Shoulders Conditioner – I found the head and shoulders conditioner even worse than the shampoo and almost impossible to rinse out fully. Felt like I was walking around with head weighed down by some weight.
Just a Coincidence – many people see the link as sheer coincidence but when you hear stories of 16 year olds complaining about head and shoulders and hair loss it makes you wonder, but still there must be a percentage of people who are experiencing genetic conditions.

What to do now – Re-growing Hair
So now that you’ve stopped using head and shoulder its time to try and reclaim some of that hair you lost and improve the state of your scalp and hair. The first thing I would do is go out and buy a good cleansing shampoo. We want to remove all that dirt and leftover shampoo off your scalp , go get your hair steamed to help lift off some of the dead skin and anything left on your scalp.
Some things you can do to speed up your Re-Growth
- Buy an
organic shampoo and try and avoid sulfates (used in pool cleaners) , try
something with added protein , vitamins and minerals. Perhaps some oils to
help with dandruff including tea tree oil, coconut oil, jojoba things like
that. Go for a mild gentle shampoo
- Massage your scalp to remove dead skin and dirt on your scalp. This also improves circulation and brings nutrient rich blood to your hair roots.
- Hair Vitamins are important when re-growing your hair, try to increase the amount of vegetables in your diet or try a hair vitamin pill/capsule. Usually containing magnesium, biotin, and folic acid.
- Eat healthy and Exercise and most importantly try not to stress
Good luck everyone , keep you hair and scalps healthy :)

that's interesting dohn121 do you use anything else with the head and shoulders shampoo? which particular head and shoulders product are you using?
I dunno maybe this hub was a little spur of the moment as I was reading a lot of people complaining about it and I personally had trouble with it.
Another good and unusual post, I like the informative, easily followed approach. Cool. I'm going to pass this on to some folks I know.
thanks solokoyote, ofcourse I may be a little biased against head and shoulders , but some people find it works for them
Pantene is owned by Procter and Gamble. Haha, probally who Don121 works for. I used Head and Shoulders, personally, and it did cause dramatic hair loss. It stoped when I quit using it.
Oh, forgot to mention, Proctor and Gamble owns Head and Shoulders. Honestly, if you use your head, you realize that anyone taking up for Head and Shoulders is always very cheesy about it. Dohn121 mentions how he's "Joe Consumer" and "I don't work for them or anything." Also, he mentions another shampoo owned by Procter and Gamble.
thanks for the comments bryan, Procter and gamble own so many products its hard not be using one of them. but yea I have nothing good to say about head and shoulders :)
Had really thick and oily hair. Kind of like John Stamos lol. Started using head and shoulders for a while about 2 years back.
My entire scalp is now thinning and have had tons of hair loss. No history of hair loss in family and we usually grow our hair like 2 inches every month and now I am like the black sheep.
I DEFINITELY suspect it was the head and shoulders. I used to get either classic clean or the 2-in-1 and used it everyday or at leasy 5 times a week. I started to see hairs come off in my hand when rinsing and my hair start to thin. I decided after about 1 year of use to discontinue and I decided to buy some expensive-er shampoo from my barbers and although it's costly it comes with vitamins and is gentler and does a great job.
Slowly but surely my hair is coming back. Though the thinning isn't gone, I'm not having as much hair fall out.
I think H&S was never meant for everyday use and that the formula is just too harsh. I've also bought some baby shampoo for the times when I don't have any product or anything in my hair but still need to take a shower. It's SUPER-GENTLE but doesn't clean as much but if you have short hair or only need to get some sweat from the gym out, use the baby shampoo.
Would love to hear anyone that can back up my story.
So if you are all against Head And Shoulders for causing thin loss then what do you recommend for hair loss and oily hair? Almost bought H&S last night so now I am a little leery!
go for something thats all natural, or just something nice and gentle even baby shampoo if you scalp handles laurel sulfate ok, otherwise a nice organic shampoo with essential oils is great.
I started using Head & Shoulders Intensive Treatment in November, and I saw wonderful results at first. My scalp had never looked so healthy. I was so pleased!
But by mid-December, I noticed I was losing a lot of hair and its just been getting worse and worse. It was like I was going through early female pattern baldness. Im only 34! And there is NO family history of baldness. My dad, who is in his 60s, still has all his hair. My mom hasnt even gone gray yet!!! Both sets of grandparents passed away with full heads of hair.
My doctor has tested my thyroid and my anemia, both of which are fine. I have been battling Bronchitis for 3 months, been on a variety of prescriptions. So after I did a Google search about H&S and hair loss and wound up here. Now Im wondering, did the combination of H&S and those prescriptions maybe cause this?? Im stopping using H&S immediately!!!
sorry to hear that Kamberleigh, H&S just seems to sit in your scalp clog up all your pores and hair roots they seem to get weak and just let go over time.
look for some organic shampoo something cleansing to give you a good clean and then moisturize without clogging pores. If you live near the ocean its a great remedy my hair and scalp always feel great after swimming in the ocean. Other than that you could try a hair steamer to really get rid of any dirt or left over shampoo's on your scalp.
and prescription drugs are never a good thing for hair i find they dehydrate me and make my hair brittle but sometimes you can't help it and have to take it for things like bronchitis.

IDK, I use this shampoo everyday (and all my life) and swear by it! I've not had any problems with it. I have very oily hair and no other shampoo does a better job of removing oils from my hair like Head and Shoulders! And no, I don't work for them or anything! I'm just Joe Consumer! Thanks for this.
Second to this is probably Finesse...Do they still make that? I did use to use Pantene if and when my Head and Shoulders ran out!
