Plants have been used in healing since ancient times in all cultures around the world and are still the basis of three quarters of the world's medicine today.

There was little understanding of how or why they worked, until modern science came along with its explanations, so the plants were regarded and respected as being magical, along with the people who knew how to use them.

The healing properties of some of these plants ranging from common garden weeds, herbs, cultivated shrubs, trees and bedding plants have been with us for centuries. Some are indigenous others being bought here by invaders and worldly travellers through time.

But the process of knowledge, preparation and purpose has been long forgotten by most of us in the modern world. This was usually done within family relationships being handed down from each generation. Yet only as far back as 100 years this knowledge was still widely known in rural areas .Today we go to professional herbalists or can buy natural remedies from health food shops, specialist or even your local super markets

I have been regularly using and buying natural remedies for years, especially ‘Bach's'.

Over the counter remedies now offer a very wide range of self help medicines, a few have been proven in clinical trials but while research has been able to explain some of the actions of the healing plants others still remain a mystery of how they work. The majority simply use them as our ancestors have done for thousands of years'.

I myself have recently started to make my own simple teas.

With our ever growing medical expenses and lists as well as natural remedies costing a fortune, it can be fun and reassuring to know a little about plants, herbs, vegetables, roots and flowers and how to heal yourself naturally, and sometimes for free!

There is only one very important rule, NEVER use a plant if you are not completely certain of what it is. If in doubt leave it out!

AND CAUTION should be taken for pregnant, lactating women and small children.

There are many good reference books too, available to buy or loan from your local library.
