Health Insurance Leads to Better Health

Recent studies show that individuals with private health insurance remain healthier than those without it. A study by researchers at Harvard Medical School showed vast health improvements once the uninsured had the ability to enroll in Medicare. After turning 65 years old, the individuals who lacked private health insurance began to improve their health once in the program. Also, individuals with private health insurance did not report of any significant change when transitioning to Medicare. Medicare's universal coverage for the elderly creates a better lifestyle by improving the health of those who could not afford it.

What this study does not examine is the reason these individuals did not have insurance. It is unclear whether the uninsured individuals lacked insurance because they simply could not afford it or they have been denied because of the medical history. But the facts still remain that those with insurance seem to live a healthier life.

Another study performed by the American Cancer Society found that people who had insufficient or no health insurance did not receive the proper treatment. These individuals are more likely to discover cancer and later and less curable stage. The uninsured patients also had lower survival rates than those with private health insurance.

Overall, these two studies show a substantial amount of evidence that health insurance simply improves the overall quality of your health. Some individuals may have trouble obtaining health insurance due to previous conditions but health insurance will always be a great benefit to those who can obtain it.

mmmmmmmmm,surely you jest?

Is'nt our health related to the quality of food we eat, water we drink and air we breath?

I have learnt at the tender age of 76 years that the way we think has a great deal to do with our ability to maintain optimum health and I can't help thinking that paying out several hundred dollars a year to cover us AFTER we've become sick has nought to do with our health challenges

Thank you for your time

What’s wrong with you Laurence? Does it make sense that those who pay for their health insurance will have easier access to it? And then receive medical attention more often. This article is not about eating healthy and exercising but receiving medical attention when you become ill. Those with health insurance have better access to better healthcare than those without it. So don’t look at it from your own point of view. It’s not meant to promote healthy living but to prove a point that health insurance is necessary to remain healthy.

I agree with your information. Although health-care-4life is correct in the aspect that it's our lifestyle that affects our health, it's also been shown that if you have insurance and get routine examinations, you will spot any small issues before they have a chance to cause fatal problems.

People with insurance do tend to have more professional screenings, which is very important for early detection and saving lives. Yet those of us who became entrepreneurs relied on wellness measures of lifestyle, nutrition and exercise. Interestingly, my health is far better than my siblings, who go to doctors all the time! I do have insurance now (age 60) for the first time in 15 years - but with a huge deductible - "just in case" - also with emergency care and limited prevention. The Health Savings Accounts are good plan options for healthy people like me.

Now here's another insurance need - Long Term Care insurance. 3/4 of Americans have made no provision for their own or a family member's long term care, yet 3/4 of us will need it. 80% of long term care in America today is by family and friends - so WE are the care system! Medicare doesn't cover it. Many are thrust into family caregiving, sacrificing their careers, livelihoods, relationships, finances ... their lives! There's a crisis, folks!

It is important that you bring this up. It not only has to do with the health risks of not having health insurance, but it also relates to the financial risk of not having health insurance. There are so many plans out there for very low monthly premiums that are well worth the financial investment.

That is the whole Idea behind an HMO. Preventative Care. If You can afford the Plan, and if you get approved.

Insurance no matter what area is a necessary evil. However it times of need always very comforting.

I do feel for those who cannot afford good insurance. As the years go by it will be needed more and more. One only has to look at the aging population, obesity problem and mental illness which is already beginning to put a great strain on the health system.

So prevent needing it if you can even though I know this is not the topic of the hub. If you can't afford try like crazy to keep yourself healthy. Go back to basics and eat as our ancient ancestors did and become informed as to what is happening to our food to the detriment of our health and the swelling of corporations profits.
