We all need to eat to survive. This is a universal truth. However, the role of food in the life of a dog is much more than just ensuring survival.

A nutritious diet can add a few years to the life of your dog. On the other hand, ignore the diet and the chances of the dog dying young increases drastically.

Getting the best quality dog food will be of no avail if it becomes stale and pest infested due to poor storage. Not only should you get the best quality dog food but you should also store it in good dog food storage containers.

You need not be a rocket scientist to determine what constitutes a quality food storage container. Any and every container should fulfill the following conditions:

a. It should be made of good quality material. A rusting metal container is hardly the right choice for storing dog food. Storing pet food in non food grade plastic containers will cause more harm than good.

How to determine whether the food container is made of quality materials or not? Contact your vet and seek his or her advice.

Identifying quality metal containers should not be very difficult. As far as plastic dog food containers are concerned, regulations specify the distinction between food grade and non food grade plastics.

Just opt for one which is certified as a food grade container. Search for approval by the FDA. This is conclusive proof that the container is non toxic.

b. A dog food storage container which does not have a tight fitting lid is an invitation to pests, ants, humidity and diseases.

Nothing destroys the quality of food faster than a badly fitting lid. It is time to change the container if the lid no longer fits well. Never compromise on this aspect.

c. When it comes to choosing the size of the dog food storage container, always give preference to utility. A small sized container may look very cute. However, that should not be the sole criteria of decision.

If you have a small sized pet dog at home and the small sized container suits your purpose, then buying such a container makes sense. The fact that it is very cute and colorful is just an added advantage.

d. If space is not a problem in your house and if the pet dog has a corner allocated for its exclusive use, you can opt for a storage container that is fitted with dog bowls as well.

Feeding the dog would involve nothing more than taking the food out of the container into the bowl. The dog will not take long to deduce the function of the container.

Make sure the lid is firm enough to prevent the dog from gorging on the food whenever it wants to. Overeating can be very harmful for the health of your pet dog.

Many pet owners make the mistake of equating expensive dog food storage containers with good quality containers. That need not always be the case. Do not let the price of the container determine your decision.

Consider all factors and give equal weightage to all factors before taking a decision.

Good information. I'm sure many dog owners don't give this much thought. Would you mind if I suggested that our local shelter link this on their site?
