Choline is included in the vitamin B complex as acetycholine, it is important for the proper functioning of the liver, helps in the metabolism of fat and protein, essential for growth, it helps to prevent elevation of cholesterol therefore preventing atherosclerosis and thrombosis.

A pharmacologic dose of choline seems to alleviate dyskinesia.

Other Functions of Choline in the Body :

  • It prevents accumulation of fats in the liver, prevent development of cirrhosis and degenerative changes in the kidneys.
  • Helps in the transmission of impulses.
  • For normal function of muscles.
  • Improves brain functions, especially memory among elderlies.

Symptoms and Signs of Choline Deficiency :

  1. Neurologic Disease
  2. Fatty liver
  3. Liver Cirrhosis
  4. Hemorrhagic degeneration of the kidneys, adrenals, heart and lungs.

Recommended Daily Requirements :

  • Unknown; the amount in a good diet varies between 500 to 900 mg. daily.
  • Supplemental Dosage - One tablespoon lecithin.
  • Therapeutic Dosage - 12-60 gm. Per day to treat tardive dyskinesia.

Food Sources :

  • Lecithin, brewer's yeast, fish, soybeans, peanuts, wheat germ, green leafy vegetables, egg yolk, beef, liver (contain high cholesterol).
