Sodium is essential in body cell and fluid functions so as potassium which also used in muscle contraction and enzyme operation. Both are important in maintaining a proper acid-base balance in the body. People with high blood pressure, edema, kidney problems should limit their sodium intake.

People in strict sodium-free diets should avoid eating foods that are rich in sodium like carrots, beets, and other root vegetables.

Benefits of Sodium in the Body :

  1. Important in the distribution of water in the body. It helps in maintenance of fluid volume in the vessels and tissues.
  2. Concerned with muscle and nerve irritability.

Symptoms of Deficiency : Lassitude, Weariness, Hot weather fatigue, Low blood pressure, Anorexia, Flatulence, Muscle cramps

Daily Requirements - 4 gm.

Supplemental Dosage - unnecessary, except in adrenal insufficiency, sunstroke, excessive perspiration.

Food Sources : Table salt, pickled and salted food, biscuits, bread, baking powder, seasoning, egg white, black pepper, dried fish, nuts, carrots, sausages, butter, ham.
