Thiamine is needed for carbohydrate metabolism and for the release of energy from food. It also aids the heart and the nervous system to function well.

Other Functions of Thiamine :

  1. Prevents beriberi and polyneuritis (inflammation of several nerves).
  2. Promotes growth
  3. Prevents oxidation and neutralizes free radicals (by product of metabolism), thus preventing premature aging and senility (physical and mental debility).
  4. It is anti-stress.
  5. A good adjunct in the treatment of enlarged heart, congestive heart failure and herpes.
  6. Strengthens the immune system.

Symptoms and Signs of Deficiency of Thiamine :

  • Depression, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, poor appetite, weight loss, numbness or burning sensation in the hands and feet, intolerance to pain, sensitivity to noises, edema, low blood pressure, anemia, low metabolism, shortness of breathe, heart palpitation, heart failure and enlarged heart on x-ray.
