If you're craving cookies but don't want all the calories and fat that often come with store or restaurant bought cookies, it's time to whip out the ingredients and make your own. The best part of cooking your own is that you are in control of both the serving size as well as the ingredients you use. There are many ways you can replace unhealthy ingredients in standard recipes to clean them up, or simply find a healthy recipe to begin with. Here are a few options to get you started.

Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies

½ cup natural peanut butter

½ cup oats

¾ cup sugar or Splenda

1 egg

Mix all the ingredients together and then form small bowls. Bake for about 6-8 minutes at 350 degrees or until brown.

Apple-Raisin Cookies

2.5 cups oats

0.5 tsp salt

1 tsp vanilla

.5 cup walnuts

.5 cup raisins

1 1/3 cup natural applesauce.

1 chopped apple

1 tbsp cinnamon

1 tbsp sugar

Mix all ingredients together until moist. Then form into small balls and place on a cookie sheet, flattening until you've reached your desired size. Next in another bowl combine cinnamon and sugar; set aside. Next sprinkle a few apple pieces on top of each cookie (should be chopped quite small) and lastly sprinkle a small amount of cinnamon and sugar mixture over top. Bake in a 375 degree oven for about 15 minutes and let cool after removing. Serve warm.

Oatmeal Cookies

2 cups of oats

1 tbsp baking powder

1 tbsp vanilla extract

1 tbsp cinnamon

2 eggs or 1 egg plus 3 egg whites

¼ cup fat free milk

Mix all ingredients in a bowl until a solid paste has formed. Roll into small bowls and then press into thin cookies. Bake for approximately 15 minutes at 350 degrees. After finished cooking spread a thin layer of peanut butter or chocolate Nutella spread over top.

Low Carb Peanut Butter Cookies

1 cup peanut butter

1 egg

1 cup Splenda

1 tsp baking soda

Mix the ingredients well and then place in the fridge to chill. Once cold, roll into small bowls and then press until flat. Bake at 350 degree for eight minutes and then let rest on a cookie sheet.

Low Carb Meringues

3 egg whites

½ tsp vanilla extract

½ tsp cream of tartar

½ cup splenda

Put the egg whites and cream of tarter in a mixing bowl and beat on low until eggs are foamy. Next add in vanilla and Splenda and continue to beat on medium for about one minute. The mixture should hold its shape fairly well once it's ready. Then place lumps on a pan with about ½ inch between each one. Bake at 300 degrees F for about 15 minutes until they look crispy.

So next time you have a strong craving for cookies, rather than giving into the urge and going to Starbucks for one that will easily pack away 300 calories, make your own. They're loaded with nutrition and will taste great.
