By Howard Bauer Jr,

Could gum disease, heart disease, and obesity be linked? Recent clinical studies have suggested that their is a link. Studies have shown that one in three adults have some type of cardiovascular disease, and even obesity. These studies have also shown that three out of four adults have some type of gum disease.

These and other statistics lead scientists to believe that gum disease has a connection to cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease includes coronary heart disease, heart failure, high blood pressure, and stroke. There are other studies that show the link to obesity.

One finding in a recent study confirms that gum disease causing bacteria can effect the growth of blood vessel walls which is a type of cardiovascular disease.

Another study has revealed a possible link between gum disease and obesity. There are between six hundred and six hundred and fifty different types of bacteria in your mouth. Scientists think there may be even more yet undiscovered. Studies of obese women found that one type of bacteria "selenomas noxia" had a higher than normal presence in the study group. This bacteria has a direct link to gum disease.

So, what do these studies tell us? The obesity study leaves some dought as to whether the higher than normal presence of selenomonas noxia in obese women is a result of obesity or a result of diet leading to obesity. The cardiovascular study is a bit more ominous. If bacteria in your mouth can have an effect on blood vessel walls, then we need to pay closer attention.

It is clear that good oral hygiene can have a major impact on our overall health. Brush twice daily and floss once daily. Use a good oral rinse and brush your toungue to keep the bacteria at a controllable level.

Stay healthy
