Common Heartburn and Indigestion Symptoms

The most common problem associated with digestion is heartburn. Heartburn is a result of excessive pressure on the stomach thereby causing the stomach acids to flow back up to the esophagus or the throat. This also causes some irritation or even inflammation of the throat, making it hard for you to swallow solid foods and drink fluids.

One of the usual heartburn symptoms that heartburn suffers have is the burning sensation at the back of the breastbone as well as ribs. This throbbing pain extends up to the throat. Chest pain is usually felt after eating a meal. The sufferer feels as if there is a liquid from the stomach that goes up to the throat. This makes the mouth to taste bitter or sometimes sour. The burning sensation on the chest becomes more painful when lying down or bending over. Other heartburn symptoms that you should take into account are bloating as well as burping.

Symptoms of GERD

If your heartburn is caused by GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease, then you may experience some of these symptoms. These specifically refer to the following:

  1. Sleep disorder
  2. Chronic cough
  3. Soreness of throat
  4. Bad breath or halitosis
  5. Asthma
  6. Laryngitis
  7. Sinus infection
  8. Ear infection
  9. Erosion of the teeth
  10. Nausea

It is also of the essence that you know the difference between the symptoms of heartburn and heart attack. Heartburn is a condition that needs early diagnosis and cure. It should be treated at once. Taking it for granted may give rise to other serious health problems. If your heartburn is accompanied by pain around the abdominal area, you need to consult your doctor immediately. This may be indicative of a more serious illness such as ulcer, gastritis, gall bladder disease or other major health problems.
