Hearty Black Eyed Pea Soup Recipe
A cafe I used to eat at all the time in Green Cove Springs Florida was famous for this recipe for hearty black eyed pea soup. People who visited Florida year after year would travel out to Green Cove Springs from St Augustine and Jacksonville just to eat at this little Cafe in Green Cove Springs Florida. One family ran it for 44 years until they retired and when the owner retired he gave the recipe to me and I have made it at Restaurants all over Florida and the world for a number of years. You will need for your Hearty Black Eyed Pea Soup.
1. 1 Pound Bulk Pork Sausage.
2. 1 Pound Ground Beef.
3. 2 Large Purple Sweet Onions Chopped Fine.
4. 4 Cups of Beef Broth.
5. 3 15 1/2 Oz. Cans Black Eyed Peas Washed and Drained.
6. 1 28 Oz. Can Diced Tomatoes , Undrained.
7. 1 10 Oz. Can Diced Tomatoes and Green Chilies , Undrained.
8. 1 Can 4 Oz. Chopped Green Chilies.
9. 4 Teaspoons Molasses.
10. 1 Teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce.
11. 1 Teaspoon Fresh Minced Garlic.
12. 1 Teaspoon Salt.
13. 1 Teaspoon Black Pepper.
14. 1 Teaspoon Dry Cumin.
In a large dutch oven or stock pot cook the sausage, ground beef, onion and garlic until the meat is done. You want to drain all liquid away.
Now add all your other ingredients to the dutch oven or soup pot and cook on low heat for two hours.
Hearty Black Eyed Pea Soup is delicious served over or with a square of corn bread. I guarantee you that most people will just simply love this dish. It is oh so good. And until just a few years ago it was a secret family recipe.

I made the soup directly as per the directions except my pork and ground beef were larger than a pound each, so I let a little extra Worcester sauce get into to mix. Plus, I used one bay leaf because I knew my wife would fret about that. Plus, I used a bag of dried black eye peas soaked in cold water for 8 hours. It's cooking on simmer right now and smells pretty good. I'll let you know how it turns out.
