Information about global warming, ozone depletion, and carbon footprints can be found almost anywhere. Understandably, many people are now interested in using less energy, producing less waste, and reducing carbon emissions. Starting today, there are many ways you can improve the stability of Earth's atmosphere.

Have Your Family Unplug Unused Appliances

Your toaster, computer, tv, and other appliances are pulling electricity even when they are not turned on. Cell phone chargers are also a large source of wasted energy. Although your cell phone is not plugged in, the charger is still pulling electricity.

Reduce/replace Lighting

Let the light shine in! Natural light, that is. Encourage family members to open curtains and blinds to let the sunshine in. Not only will it help our environment, but it will cut your electric bill. Nothing is better than when both sides win. You can also purchase compact fluorescent light bulbs that use less energy and typically last longer...to save you money again!

Conserve Water

Check faucets and toilets for leaks and drips. Tell your children not to leave water running while brushing their teeth and ask them to shorten their showers. Only run full loads in the washing machine and only water your lawn when absolutely necessary.

Make a Home Recycling Collection Center

Use a small section of your garage or basement for a recycling collection center. Have family members take their recyclables directly to the center and sort them into the appropriate containers. Doing so will keep your home neater, make collection and sorting easier on you, and lead to less waste. Likewise, look to purchase products made from recycled materials.

Carpool

Find out if someone at the office lives nearby that you can carpool with. Same with the kids if they are not on a bus route. Carpooling will greatly reduce emissions and will also save a driver's money for fuel. If possible, bike or walk to work or school on nice days.

Plant a Tree

Planting a tree does not truly reduce your energy consumption and waste, but it does help to stabilize Earth's atmosphere by trapping CO2 emissions and reducing human impact.

Even one person can have a strong impact on our environment. Imagine getting your spouse and children in on the action. In my case, I would raise the number from one person to 5 people.
