Being a victim of identity theft can leave you without any money, but it affects a person emotionally and mentally as well. Most people who have been through it need therapy to cope with the feelings of anger and anxiety. They also have a hard time trusting the internet, banks, or people in general after such a traumatic experience. It is hard to get your life back in order after such an ordeal.

It is common to lose thousands of dollars as a victim of identity theft and then have to spend thousands more to get things back on track. It can take years to track down the information with a paper trail, close accounts, explain to creditors and credit card companies that you were a victim of identity theft, and then to file papers in court regarding the situation. It can be an exhausting effort that never seems to end. Some people have even lost their job because of the time they need to dedicate to clearing up identity theft issues.

There are some wonderful agencies who offer assistance to those who are a victim of identity theft including counseling to help the person over come trust issues. Many lawyers now specialize in the area of identity theft including filing the various types of paperwork for you, helping to track the amount of the loss, and all the other aspects involved.

The sooner you are able to identify that there is something wrong the faster you can act on it. Make sure you pay close attention to your credit card statements and that you review your credit report at least once a year for any errors. There is also a variety of different software available that you can use to assist you with monitoring credit card activity that may be fraudulent. This is small investment for peace of mind. Ask anyone who has been a victim of identity theft and they will tell you that if they had known more about how to prevent it they would have.
