Relocation can be traumatic to people when handled badly. It can also be equally stressful to your pets. Like everything else, proper planning is essential to ensuring a fuss-free and smooth transition – for you and for your pets as well.

If you had your pets for over a year or so, you already know that both dogs and cats have a tendency to become distressed when a toy, certain food or a particular thing disappears. According to animal experts and veterinarians, animals too fear new surroundings. It is important to make suitable arrangements to ensure that all safety and other necessary precautions are made. Since most animals are not used to traveling, especially long distances, it is important not to leave them unattended as it only increases their anxiety.

It is best to start planning for your precious pet’s transfer as soon as you are sure you will relocate to another place. One thing that all pet owners should remember is the fact that pets should not be shipped in a moving truck on their own since this is not permitted, even by cheap truck rental companies. By traveling with its owner, your pet or pets will be able to retain a sense of identity. But just the same, it is advisable to get a clear identification card for your pet just in case it gets lost while in transit. Remember that both dogs and cats have a tendency to bolt when frightened, so make sure to keep them in crates or leashes when inside the car or moving truck.

A visit to the vet should be on top of your list before your journey to conduct a general checkup to your per. During the visit, make sure to obtain the following: health certificates, your pet’s medical records, entry permits (when needed), and a reference to a new vet to the place you will be moving to and maybe a mild sedative for your pet during the entire trip. Experts also advise it is also a good idea to avoid changing any of your pet’s daily routine on the day of the move.

Traveling by car is probably the most ideal way to transport you pet to his/her new home since it provides a certain sense of security at the same time it is less expensive. However, if your pet is not used to car travel, it would be wise to start short care trips before the move just to get your pet accustomed to the car’s moving. Stopping every so often will also be a good thing as it allows your pet to stretch out every now and then. For longer trips, make you that you take time to scout motels that accept pets to save time. Also, don’t forget to carry with you items that your pet may need during the travel, like ample supply of food and fresh water, medications and even his/her favorite  toy.
