Hemroids, also referred to as piles,  are enlarged or swollen vein walls of the anus and sometimes the area around the rectum as well.  If these swollen veins get worse and are not treated, the veins can protrude from the anus. You might have just one of these swollen veins, but unfortunately, many times you will have more than one.
