Hemorrhoids are one of those diseases that are at the top of the list for all out embarrassment when a sufferer experiences the symptoms. I personally have never had hemorrhoids but I have had irritable bowel syndrome, an equally embarrassing disease that can be worse than incontinence. Many people shy away from seeing their doctor to get hemorrhoids pain relief because they are embarrassed about having to endure a doctor or nurse poking around behind there and possibly telling them that they are just going to perform a painless anoscopy. An anascopy is never painless. It is not something simple like a prostate exam where your physician sticks his/her finger just a short way in for a feel around. Dare I say it is a little bit more than that. nevertheless for many people the quest for hemorrhoids relief is usually enough of a motivator to send them to the doctor.

Hemorrhoids Mis-diagnosed

This is important because what you think might be hemorrhoids, the bleeding, the pain, the little lump you feel down their may be something entirely different and even more dangerous like a malignant polyp. Any bleeding from the rectum is serious and requires you to do the right thing and make an appointment with your physician. You can also make an appointment at a hemorrhoids relief center. There are a bunch of hemorrhoid relief centers scattered around the country that deal with hemorrhoids and related diseaeses only. There are hemorrhoid relief center locations in Virginia, Maryland and three locations in Florida.

Hemorrhoids Medication

For hemorrhoids relief there are topical medications and oral medications. Topical medications relieve pain, itching, swelling and irritation for external hemorrhoids primarily. However they do not offer any kind of permanent solution. Oral medications are generally more effective in treating symptoms of both internal and external afflictions including bleeding hemorrhoids, anal fissures and offering hemorrhoid pain relief.

Topical medications for relief of hemorrhoids may take the form of creams, ointments and suppositories. You can use an ointment like Nupercainal whose active ingredient Cinchocaine is a topical analgesic that relives pain due to hemorhoids. Other hemorrhoid relief medicines are Venapro and Avatrol which have more natural ingredients in them and are also over the counter and come in pill form to work on internal hemorrhoids. Other natural hemorrhoid relief treatments include a variety of herbs with varied functions. Milk thistle is good for cleaning out the liver and the herb bilberry is full of bioflavinoids (anti inflammatory compounds) that help diminish external hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids Prevention

There are certain common sense daily habits to keep in mind when you are suffering from hemorrhoids that can really help in having a pain and discomfort. The first thing is that you should be ld be alert to any discomfort you feel around the anal and rectal area. You may not recognize a symptom as hemorrhoids right away but if you take control of the situation immediately you're more likely to catch hemorrhoids in its early stages. If you seek relief as soon as the symptoms present themselves then this can make all the difference in finding a simple treatment that will completely rid you of the affliction.

It will pay off in that you will be an early adopter of preventative measures like using moist wipes with soothing ointment like witch's hazel instead of rough toilet paper thereby lessening the irritation to the hemorrhoid. You can also use soothing aloe vera gel as a wipe and then finish it off by coating with petroleum jelly so the are is lubricated and won't be irritated by friction. You can also begin the sitz treatment and begin to apply cold packs that reduce inflammation. When cleaning the anal area during a shower its best not to use soap since the sulfates and binders in the soap will irritate the hemorrhoid. Simply clean the area with aloe vera and then rinse gently.

Hemorrhoids and Pregnancy

Since many cases of hemorrhoids develop post pregnancy or come from straining on the toilet because of compacted feces or constipation, it makes sense to keep in mind that while on the toilet it is best not to strain for a bowel movement. Rather, instead of "trying to go" at your preconditioned timings, you should go as soon as you feel like it because then the feces are loose and soft and don't have the opportunity to get compacted if you had decided instead to wait it out. You should also limit your time on the toilet seat under five minutes and under three minutes is even better. You can use a small footstool to raise your legs a bit to even out the pressure on your buttocks so its not concentrated in any one area. You can also get up and walk around till the urge returns and confine yourself to short gentle pushes lasting no more than ten seconds during defecation. As soon as you are done, get up and get cleaned. Keep those magazines and books out of your bathroom.

Surgical Treatment of Hemorrhoids

Finally, if you end up in a situation where your hemorrhoids are out of control and it looks like surgery is the only option for you then make sure you discuss all the available treatment options with your physician. You may need to go to a specialist to get the whole background on your options. the doctor may decide that sclerotherapy or rubber band ligation is all that's necessary to relive you of the disease since excision by surgery under local anesthesia entails certain long term risks. Only when there is severe hemorrhoid affliction with thrombosis will your doctor pull out the hemorrhoidectomy card in which case you might have no choice but to follow your doctor's direction.
