Hendersonville Curb Market

Hendersonville Curb Market

A popular attraction  in Hendersonville, North Carolina is the Hendersonville Curb Market.  Established in 1924 and located at 221 North Church Street this family oriented market has served this community for a long time. This popular market is open from 8 AM until 2 PM Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Many of the original families still own and operate booths within this magnificent facility. Fruits, vegetables, flowers, crafts, and almost anything in the way of canned good, jellies, jams and pickles can be found in at least one or even more of the booths here.

There is a congenial spirit within the walls of this great outlet.  It is no small wonder the Hendersonville Curb Market is ever growing in popularity from home folks as well as a large number of tourist who visit during the summer months. A hearty “Good morning, a handshake or “Ya’ll come back again real soon,” is often heard as happy customers leave with their newly purchased goods.

Louise Hill has been coming here since its inception and carries a great line of in season vegetables grown on her family farm in the Dana community. She also has a wide variety of handmade crafts and even unusual items on occasion such as hornet’s nests which she has gotten from some pretty wild places, believe it or not the wilder the location the more the nest seems to have value. She still makes those great fried apple pies, a secret she learned from her mother, Mrs. Essie Jackson. Louise will also have such things as wild herbs and bittersweet in the late fall months. An interesting thing happened to Louise and her husband, Dewitt several years ago go.

Louise and Dewitt had been out one morning harvesting some plants and wild flowers she thought she might be able to sell at her booth the following business day.  She and Dewitt had probably hiked a bit farther than either would care to admit and  in their hike back to their vehicle had stopped to rest on an old log which lay near the trail.  After catching their breath and enjoying the harmony of nature at its finest; they were both rested enough to continue their walk out. Dewitt put his hands down to give himself a push to get up from his log seat and as he did  was bitten on the hand by a copperhead, one of the few poisonous snakes found in the Western North Carolina area. It had blended in so well with the colors around the old log where they had been sitting perfectly camouflaged and unnoticed by either Louise or Dewitt.

They were more than a comfortable distance from any medical assistance.  Fortunately, they were able to finish their trek out of the woods and get medical attention in plenty of time. The first dose of anti-venom serum administered at the hospital was not sufficient to adequately neutralize the snake bite.  A second anti-venom injection was then administered and was successful in reducing and eliminating the effects of the copperheads bite., Dewitt soon got better but he will tell you to this day, he doesn’t want to have to go through this again and when out in the wilds nowadays is even more conscious of his surroundings.
