The First Step In Learning How To Save A Marriage

Where Do You Start?

OK, how to you prevent divorce in a troubled marriage? What if your spouse doesn't seem to want to even try? The answer to those questions will be different for each circumstance but there is one key ingredient that is crucial to learning how to save a marriage. I'm talking about forgiveness. Real, sincere forgiveness is the cornerstone of any successful marriage.

Forgiveness Is Not A Feeling

It's not always easy to forgive. It's even harder when you have a legitimate complaint against your spouse and they don't seem to care. It is human nature to want to get back at someone who hurts you. Forgiveness is a decision, not an emotion. It might be hard, but it is crucial to saving your marriage.

Forgiveness Heals Marriages

Once you accept the fact that forgiveness isn't a feeling but an action, it will help you forgive your spouse whether they deserve it or not. Is that justice? Maybe not, but carrying around a grudge won't help either of you and it can cripple your efforts to save your marriage. Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the doorway to healing in a relationship.

You've Got To Let Go Of the Past

Forgiveness doesn't keep score. Many people will say they can forgive but they won't forget. That's not true forgiveness.

Forgiveness is a result of love. To paraphrase the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians "Love doesn't hold grudges" This is a great passage to read if you are trying to figure out how to save a marriage. Until you are willing to wipe the slate clean and start fresh, your marriage is on dangerous ground.

Give Love A Chance

When you decide to let bygones be bygones and forgive your spouse, you are clearing the way for Love to work. It means that you are willing to treat your spouse how you would like to be treated, even when they are in the wrong. Love doesn't quit when things get tough. It means learning how to save a marriage, even if looks like there is no way you can. The reward is worth the effort.
