Ever since there has been a need to keep one's personal possessions safe, especially possessions such as property, there have been security devices to help protect them. In modern times, we have alarm systems, telephone lines, and even the internet to help us with home security, but mankind didn't always have such technology. Before that, other things had to be used; much more primitive things.

The Great Wall of China is an ancient security device

The Wall

One of the early security devices is still used even today. The wall. We often call them fences instead, but it's really the same thing. Walls have a very simple purpose; to be a barrier to prevent someone on one side of it from reaching the other side.  How effective is it?  Well, that depends on how easy it is to go around it or climb over it.

The Great Wall of China is a particularly famous example of this ancient security device.

The Moat

The moat was often used in combination with the wall.  The idea was generally that it is hard to climb over a wall when there is literally nothing but water in the way.  Especially if that water has something dangerous in it, like crocodiles.

The Gate

Yet another continuing combo. Obviously, you want to enter the area that you are protecting, but you don't want to allow others to. The solution: combine the previously mentioned wall and moat with a gate!  Though, to be honest, a moat isn't completely necessary.  A good wall and gate can be enough. Still, the more protection the better, right?

But, there's another perk for using a gate!  Not only can it protect your domicile from outsiders, but it can look like a work of art while it does it!

The Bridge

Here's an item that goes particularly well with your moat.  A bridge!  This can allow you to cross over your moat easily, because you are one person and therefore quite small.  However, an army that is trying to ravage your lands will not be so fortunate, for they are large!  Only so many people will fit on the bridge, and it's much easier to fight off a couple hundred of enemies at once than a couple thousand!  The catch?  A bridge is almost useless by itself.  But, when combined with a moat, a gate, and a wall, you'll have quite the ancient security system in place!

The Oldest Security Device Of Them All!

What's the single oldest security device? Well, it's quite versatile. It can be carried on you at all times, it can be used to protect your personal body, and it can be used to protect your home! It's your fists!

Sure, it has its limitations, and it doesn't help that everyone has their own, but it's the epitome of convenience when it comes to security devices!

But, you say, you want to learn about modern security devices!  Well, that's not the topic for today, but I do know somewhere that you can look to find out all sorts of things about modern home security devices.  This list of types of alarms is an excellent place to start.

There you go.  Now those interested in the old get their info while those interested in the new get theirs.  Now you can never tell me that I don't try to please everyone!
