High Protein Diets and Fat Loss
66Looking for a new diet that will jump start your weight loss? If so, you might be considering what a high protein diet can do for you.
High protein diets are becoming more and more common, especially with all the low-carb craze going around the weight loss world right now.
While high protein diets can work very well for fat loss, unless they are used in a certain manner, they can become very dangerous over the long term.
That's why you understand a few critical factors.
Exercise and High Protein Diets
First, realize that while high protein diets are definitely going to decrease the chance of lean muscle mass, unless you are taking in carbohydrates at some point during the week, you will not be able to maintain high intensity exercises on a low-carb, low-fat, high protein diet.
Don't even try as you'll just run into issues.
Furthermore, when on a high protein diet, it's a good idea to reduce the total volume of your workouts down, in effort to help decrease the depletion of muscle glycogen that's seen.
Hunger and High Protein Diets
Next up, realize that one of the reasons why high protein diets do work so well is because of the fact that hunger levels are a lot lower while following them.
Protein is one of the most satisfying macronutrients, therefore the more of it you eat, the decrease in hunger you'll likely feel.
Now, that said you still must be sure you are taking in enough calories as any diet that is simply too low in calories is likely to cause a metabolic crash. I would recommend taking in no fewer than 8-9 multiplied by your body weight in pounds. This is the absolute lowest you should ever go - and most people will not need to go this low.
High Protein Weight Loss Diets and Food Selection
Next, another big reason why high protein diets tend to work so well is simply because of the fact they really limit the food selection you have.
Think about it. Without any form of carbs, how many choices do you really have?
Very few.
Thus, high protein diets work in an indirect effect by simply decreasing the variety of food you're allowed to eat.
For this reason, it's also a good idea to make sure you are taking a multi-vitamin while on a high-protein diet, especially if you are reducing the amount of fruits and vegetables you're consuming.
You don't want to start running a deficiency in any major nutrient otherwise you may start experiencing greater fatigue levels - and high protein diets are already going to affect your energy levels as it is.
High Protein Diets and Water Weight Loss
Finally, be aware that high protein diets will cause a water weight loss, so the large amount of weight you initially lose is likely going to be due partly to this effect.
As long as you are able to craps this concept though and do not start to believe that this rate of weight loss will continue on, this should not be a drawback of such a diet approach.
So, if you are going to consider a high protein diet, do so with care. While they can work very well, if they are not done under proper circumstances, they can also cause a great deal of problems as well.
