Making the Most of a High School Fundraiser
57There are times when students think of earning money for themselves as a class or a group to fund certain projects. The most common way of earning money which secondary school students will find easy and enjoyable is a high school fundraiser. Not only can this be an effective way of earning money but it can also be a venue for building camaraderie and leadership among the students. The students’ creativity can also be harnessed and developed as the activity proceeds. Allowing students to participate in these kinds of activities expose them to the dynamics of work and project handling which can help them develop good work ethics. Fundraisers need thorough planning, support and participation by the members and good task delegation to ensure the project’s good execution.
Creative brainstorming and planning is essential to set the project in motion. Brainstorming meetings are good venues to extract ideas from the students and use them to lay-out some ground work. The students should be able to think of a theme or main activity from where all tasks in the fund raising will be based upon. A project head may be chosen among the students to lead and preside in meetings. Teams must be formed for every major task involved in the activity. For example, a high school fundraiser in the form of a bake sale could form several teams that will handle baking, costumer relations, promotions, logistics and venue design separately. This is a good way to ensure that tasks are well distributed.
One element that is critical to the success of the project is participation. The school fundraiser will depend on every member’s active participation and fullfilment of his/her assigned tasks. Everyone must have the drive to make the project successful. It is therefore important that each student practice good work ethic and concern for his fellow students. In addition to ensuring that the student volunteers are working hard, it is important that the school community pitch in as well. Inform the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and other groups within the community about your fundraiser. You’ll be surprised as to how many people will lend a helping hand.
A high school fundraiser carried out well can surely provide not just money but also good values and enjoyment to the students participating in the event. Fundraisers need not to be extravagant or too complex to boom; all they need are creative minds set to achieve one goal.
